FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Captain Leo Thomas scored twice, including the decisive goal in the third period as the Mississippi RiverKings (31-18-2) beat the Fayetteville FireAntz (20-24-7), 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Crown Coliseum. The RiverKings swept the three-in-three with the FireAntz and have won four straight games to climb into sole possession of second place in the SPHL standings.
Thomas got the first goal of the game at 12:18 of the first period when he fired in a shot from near the crease. Linden Bahm started the play behind the net then sent a blind pass to Thomas in front and he finished it for his 20th goal of the season. Bahm and Matt Whitehead assisted on the goal.
The FireAntz got the only goal of the second period by converting on a 3-on-2 when Mike Montrose fired a shot from the left circle on a pass from Chad Hohmann at 3:59.
The game entered the third tied at one, but the RiverKings controlled play over the final 20 minutes and got the decisive goal from Thomas at 9:49. He received a pass from Andrew Randazzo in the defensive zone and went down the left wing into the offensive zone. He stopped quickly at the left circle, then started again to escape the defense before shooting through traffic for a 2-1 lead. The RiverKings outshot the FireAntz, 16-5, in the third and Peter Di Salvo earned his 18th win by stopping 20 of 21 shots in the game.
Notes: The RiverKings finished their road schedule with a 16-11-1 record away from the Landers Center, their best road record since joining the SPHL... Leo Thomas scored his sixth game-winning goal, which is tied for the most in the SPHL... The RiverKings swept the five-game season series with the FireAntz, taking all 10 points from Fayetteville.
The RiverKings are back home for a weekend set with the Peoria Rivermen Friday, Mar. 20 and Saturday Mar. 21. March 20 is Conservation Night presented by Christian Brothers University.
