The Austin Mavericks were one of the charter franchises of the USHL when it went all-junior in 1979. A carry-over from the USHL's pro era, the Mavericks were at or near the .500 mark in each of the first six seasons. That sixth season, 1984-85, the Mavericks enjoyed their best season as a junior team, sporting a 39-8-1 record and claiming their first, and only, Anderson Cup. Regular season success didn't transfer to the playoffs, however, as it was Dubuque who brought home the Clark Cup.

The team was led NHL draft pick Mike DeCarle and Brad Atol up front. They also had a trio of formidable defensemen in USHL defensive scoring king Mike Castellano, All-USHL selection Rob Pallin and a youngster named Mike Hastings.

The season was bittersweet for Austin, as after the season the franchise moved to Rochester and became the Mustangs.

USHL INSIDER 12 Times At Tyson: Sioux City put up 12 goals on Tri-City in Friday's game. The last time the Musketeers hit double digits in goals was November 5, 2005.

All But One: Of the 18 Sioux City skaters in uniform on Friday night, 17 of them recorded at least one point. Nine players enjoyed multi-point games. The two goaltenders and defenseman Chase Drake were the only ones to go pointless in the game.

More From Sioux City: Ten players scored goals in the game for the Musketeers, with Austin Mattson and Adam Pawlick each scoring twice. Mike Makes A Mark: Last week Mike Cichy was traded from Tri-City to Indiana. All he did was put up eight points in his first two games with the Ice. He scored the game-winning goal and had three assists in Friday's 6-2 win over Chicago. On Saturday, he factored in on every Ice goal with another goal and three assist performance in an 8-4 loss to Green Bay.

This Mike, Too: Mike Merrifield scored two goals, including the gamewinner and added an assist in Green Bay's only game of the week, an 8-4 win over Indiana on Saturday. And Don't Forget This Mike: Mike Seidel scored all the goals in Cedar Rapids' 3-2 win over Des Moines on Friday.

Simply "Sioux"per: Sioux Falls has won four straight and outscored opponents 20-4 in those games.

Where They Come From: The USHL announced the rosters for the 2009 Prospects/All-Star Game last week. 40 players were chosen to participate in the game, representing 13 states and four foreign countries. Minnesota led the way with nine players in the game, followed by Michigan, who had six players. California, Wisconsin and New York had three players each.

Earning Their Stripes: Former USHL officials Shane Warschaw and Mike Hamilton were chosen to be part of the officiating crew in the ECHL All- Star Game - Warschaw as a referee and Hamilton as a linesman.

PRO ALUMNI NEWS

Konrad Reeder (Tri-City) was named MVP of the CHL All-Star Game after scoring four goals and adding an assist as the Colorado Eagles defeated the CHL All-Stars 8-4. Reeder scored one goal in the first period, one in the second and two in the third, the last of which came while shorthanded. Reeder also had five points in last year's CHL All-Star Game.

Blake Wheeler (Green Bay) is currently second in the NHL in plus/minus ranking, coming in at +27. He is one of four Bruins among the top five in the league.

Jason Blake (Waterloo) had a monster game on Thursday, scoring three goals and adding a pair of assists as Toronto beat Carolina 6-4. It was Blake's first hat trick with the Maple Leafs and the five points were a career high. He now has 13 goals on the season, this coming after he scored just 15 with the Leafs a year ago.

Kevin Swider (Omaha) is tied for the top spot in the SPHL's three-star rankings with 33 points. Swider, the top scorer in the SPHL, has been the first star of the game three times this season.

Erik Cole (Des Moines) had a hat trick as Edmonton beat Washington 5-2 on Tuesday. Cole's last hat trick also came against the Capitals, when he scored three against them on November 9, 2006 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.

David Hale (Sioux City) waited longer than anyone in history to score his first NHL goal, going 231 games before finding the back of the net. He notched his second career goal in Phoenix's 4-3 win over Calgary on Saturday, night, a mere 12 games after he scored his first.
