Third Period Leads Slip Away as Chill Lose in Overtime
January 8, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
St. Charles Chill News Release
St. Charles, Mo. - The Chill started quickly tonight, stretching a 1-0 first period lead to 2-0 in the first few minutes of the second but the Cutthroats sliced into it and came back from one goal deficits twice in the third period to force overtime before winning 4-3 on a goal from Aaron MacKenzie.
St. Charles (8-22-5) scored less than four minutes into the game when Kyle O'Kane was set up by Nicklas Lindberg, O'Kane's team-best 14th goal and the 13th helper from Lindberg, who would add another in the second period.
With the Chill up 1-0, Jordan Fox broke in behind the defense after taking the pass from Lindberg and put on a nifty set of moves to shake a defender on his back and fake out the goalie for a 2-0 advantage. Robby Moss made some huge saves to keep the lead at 2-0 but the leading scorer in the Central Hockey League would cut in to the deficit.
Garett Bembridge scored his 26th of the season to close the gap to 2-1 at the 12:35 mark of the second period but St. Charles carried that lead into the locker room. Denver (17-9-6) got out to the quick start in the third.
Twenty seconds into the final stanza Troy Schwab ripped a shot past Moss to tie the game at 2-2 but St. Charles would respond with Moss setting the table. The Chill goalie fired a stretch pass to John Snowden who raced down the left side and fired a backhander past Kent Patterson giving St. Charles back the third period lead at 3-2 but there was still 15 minutes remaining.
St. Charles killed off two crucial power plays in the third period and kept the top unit in check for the game but Bembridge struck again with just over seven minutes left to tie the game and MacKenzie picked up the game-winner at the 1:25 mark of overtime.
The Chill is back on the ice this Friday for Hockey Appreciation Night complete with a free public pregame skate that starts at 3:00 p.m. Pepsi Family 4-Packs are available for just $60 by calling the Chill front office and discounted tickets are available for all youth hockey players and fans who sport their favorite jersey to the game.
