Dayton Dragons News Release
The Dayton Dragons (20-21) handled the Cedar Rapids Kernels (20-20) 5-2 Thursday night, as Josh Thigpen (W, 1-3) picked up his first victory of the season tossing 6.0 innings of six hit one run baseball. Thigpen was dominant on the hill striking out four Kernel hitters and walking just one.
Dayton drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning taking a 1-0 lead. Kevin Howard drew a one out walk, went to third on a Ryan Hanigan single and scored on a fielder's choice ground out off the bat of Travis Wong. The Dragons lead would be short lived however, as the Kernels tied the game 1-1 in the top half of the fourth inning.
Cedar Rapids catcher Jacob Abruzzo knocked a leadoff solo homerun into the seats in right field knotting up the game at one a piece after four innings.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Wong lead off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on Mark Schramek's double putting runners at second and third with no outs. Brad Correll knocked in Wong on a groundout giving Dayton a 2-1 lead. Daniel Arias (L, 1-1) lasted just two thirds of an inning in relief for Micah Posey (ND) but took the mound loss.
Dayton would put the game out of reach in the seventh inning scoring three times all coming off a towering three run homerun off the bat of Mark Schramek. Schramek drilled the first pitch he saw into the right field lawn section chasing home Howard who reached on an error, and Wong who was intentionally walked in front of the Dayton third baseman.
Cedar Rapids scored a single run in the ninth inning, but Josh Dawes (S, 3) would put any thoughts of a comeback from the Kernels to bed as he closed the door in the ninth inning notching his third save in 1.1 innings of work. Dawes allowed a single run on 0 hits and struck out one.
The Dragons and Kernels wrap up the four game series Friday night at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 pm. Time Warner Television Channel 25 will televise the game to the Miami Valley and surrounding areas as well. RHP Jimmy Haynes will make a rehab start for the Dragons while Cedar Rapids will counter with RHP Kevin Jepsen.
