Florida Everblades News Release

ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush along with head coach Malcolm Cameron announced the signing of defenseman AJ Thelen for the 2009-10 season. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

AJ Thelen returns to Southwest Florida after scoring three goals and chipping in 14 assists for 17 points in 34 contests last season. The first round pick (12th overall) of the Minnesota Wild in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft also appeared in 10 Kelly Cup playoff games last season scoring an assist and registering 14 minutes in penalties. Thelen struggled with injures during the season, suffering a pair of concussions.

Thelen played for Everblades coach Malcolm Cameron in 2007-08 with the Texas Wildcatters as well. In 63 games, the Savage Minnesota native scored seven goals, 28 assists for 35 points with 70 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenseman said he is looking forward to rebounding this season, "Last year was disappointing team and individual wise....I am really looking forward to coming back and contributing to a solid team in front of the great fans of Southwest Florida."

Prior to turning pro, Thelen spent two seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Prince Albert and Vancouver. He also enjoyed two seasons in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with the Michigan State Spartans. Thelen has received one promotion to the American Hockey League, appearing in one game with the Houston Aeros during the 2005-06 season.

"AJ Thelen battled through a rough injury-plagued season last year," said second-year mastermind Malcolm Cameron. "He is big, strong guy that skates well and moves the puck. I am looking forward to seeing him rebound to the production he had in his rookie season."

Thelen will be attending the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage training camp.
