(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today announced the signing of veteran Canadian fullback Mike Maurer.

Maurer, who announced his retirement May 13, 2008, spent the last three years (2005 - 2007) of his 11 CFL seasons with Edmonton. The Saskatoon native started his career with Saskatchewan and spent four seasons (1997 - 2000) with the 'Riders. He also played in BC (2000-'01) and Ottawa (2002 - '04).

Maurer signed as a free agent with Edmonton in 2005 and was named the Outstanding Canadian in the Esks' 2005 Grey Cup victory. In 2006, he led the team in special teams tackles with 23 and was Edmonton's nominee for the CFL's Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. In 2007, Maurer was tied for the team lead with 20 special teams tackles and caught two passes for 14 yards and one touchdown.
