August 15, 2008 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Montreal Impact News Release
MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact and Radio-Canada Sports Service announced Friday that the two games of the home-and-away series in the CONCACAF Champions League against the Real Esteli FC, the Nicaraguan champion team, will be broadcast on Radio-Canada.
The first game, which will be played on August 27 at Saputo Stadium, will be broadcast live at 8 pm and will be preceded by a 30-minute pre-game show. The return game of the series will be on a one-hour tape delayed basis on Tuesday, September 2, at 11 pm (Eastern time).
The away game will be played at Carlos Miranda Stadium, in Comayagua in Honduras since there is no stadium in Nicaragua respecting FIFA and CONCACAF norms.
"We are very happy that Radio-Canada will allow Impact supporters and soccer fans to see these two historical games, both in Montreal and in Honduras," said Impact and Saputo Stadium Executive Vice President Richard Legendre. "The Impact will play its first two international games in history and we are very enthusiastic that our fans will witness this event."
"We are proud of the Impact, which will be the first team to represent our country in the CONCACAF Champions League," added Radio-Canada Sports Director Luc Grenier. "As the official Impact and World Cup broadcaster, Radio-Canada Television had to be present for this premiere."
The Impact made it in the CONCACAF Champions League July 22 by winning the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, at the expense of Toronto FC (MLS) and the Vancouver Whitecaps (USL D1).
Sixteen of the 24 clubs, including the Impact, have to take part in a preliminary home-and-away series in late August and early September.
The preliminary round winners will then join the other eight seeded teams in the group stage, which will consist of four groups of four. Every team in each group will play against each other in a round-robin tournament, starting September 16.
