Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, CT - The Mystic Schooners (7-8) and Newport Gulls (9-8) split a doubleheader with both games ending in one-run victories.

Game 1: Down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Mystic scored two runs to take the lead and win the first game of the doubleheader. The Schooners had three hits through the first seven innings, but used two singles in extras to propel them past the Gulls. Mystic tied it up after a dropped third strike plated Tucker Flint (North Carolina Greensboro). Joseph Jaconski (North Carolina) then stroked a hit into the outfield before Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) hit a walk-off single.

The first runs of the game came in the top of the eighth. Newport took the lead after an RBI single from Samuel Kulasingam (United States Air Force Academy). The Gulls' advantage would be short lived as two Mystic runs in the bottom of the inning ended the contest.

The game was scoreless for the first seven innings with a pitching duel taking place. Gulls starter Dominic Perachi (Salve Regina) gave up just two hits in five innings of work. The combination of Schooners starter Hector Alejandro (Connecticut) and relievers Bowen Baker (Fairfield) and Jimmy Chatfield (Yale) let up only four hits before extra innings began.

Game 2: Newport used starter Logan McGuire's (Georgia Tech) strong outing to hold a lead for the entirety of the second game. McGuire gave up six hits and two walks in five innings while striking out ten Mystic batters. The Gulls surrendered two runs while the right-hander was on the mound, one of which was not earned, and jumped out to an early lead they never looked back on.

Newport struck quickly in the bottom of the first, going up 2-0 thanks to a two-run double by Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut St). The Schooners and Gulls traded runs in the third to keep it a two-run contest before an Addison Kopack (Rhode Island (U of)) single in the fifth shrinked the gap to one. Kopack ended with two hits and two RBIs.

Newport hosts Marthas Vineyard (9-8) later today at 6:35 p.m. while Mystic travels to struggling North Shore (3-14) at 6:35 p.m. as well.

Sanford Mainers 5 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 0

W - Bryce Afthim 1-1 (Southern Maine): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

L - Kyle Roche 2-2 (Franklin Pierce): 4.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 3 K

Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine - The Sanford Mainers (8-10) defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (7-9) after a spectacular showing from their pitchers.

Bryce Afthim did not allow the Muskrats many offensive opportunities. He only allowed five base runners, who all reached via the single. Also, no one on Winnipesaukee got past first base until the seventh inning. As a team, Sanford did not allow a walk, which was one of the reasons the Mainers earned a shutout victory.

The Mainers' runs came in a variety of ways. In the second inning, Jayson Kremer (St. John's) hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. In the same inning, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) had an RBI walk. Two innings later, Quinn McDaniel (Maine Orono) hit an RBI groundout and Polk hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Then in the seventh inning, Polk delivered again with an RBI single.

The Mainers will have a couple of days off until their next game, which will be on the road on Wednesday against the North Shore Navigators at 6:35 p.m. Winnipesaukee will be at home today for a 6 p.m. game against the Bristol Blues.

W - Jake McOsker 1-0 (Holy Cross) 1 IP 1 H 0 ER 0 BB 2 K

L - Noah Dean 0-1 (Old Dominion) 1.2 IP 3 H 2 ER 1 BB 3 K

Old Mountain Field in Kingston R.I. - The Ocean State Waves (8-10) defeated the Keene Swamp Bats (7-10) on the back of timely pitching. A combination of six Ocean State pitchers struck out twelve Keene batters and caused the opposing offense to leave ten runners on base. Jacob Cush (Missouri Columbia) got things started with four shutout innings allowing only one hit. The five relievers pitched an inning each and held the Swamp Bats to two runs on four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

The Ocean State offense got going in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles by Drew Holderbach (Marietta) and Justin Long (Rice). The Waves were up 2-0, and the lead doubled in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Khyree Miller (Winthrop), and a steal of home by Daniel Baruch (Boston College) on a pickoff attempt at first. In the ninth, Keene was down to its last strike when Tony Santa Maria (Rutgers) crushed a two run home run to cut the deficit in half, making it 4-2 Waves. However, that score would hold and Ocean State was victorious.

Both teams will have an off day on Monday before returning to their home fields for action on Tuesday. The Waves will take on the North Shore Navigators at 6:30 p.m. The Swamp Bats, who are looking to build back momentum after dropping seven of its last eight, will face the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at 6:30 p.m.

Maxfield Sports Complex in Hartford, VT - The Upper Valley Nighthawks (9-7) defeated the Danbury Westerners (8-9) in a game that was tight until it was not.

The Westerners got on top early after Harrison Feinberg (Southern California) drove Jett Lovett (Georgia Tech) in from second base on a single. Then, with two outs, Nicholas Romano (Georgia Tech), Sam Mongelli (Sacred Heart), and Colby Canales (Pacific) walked to bring Feinberg in. From there, all the offense came from Upper Valley's side.

Tyler Sorrentino (Charleston) led off the bottom of the first with a hit by pitch, and he was driven in on a Ryan Ignoffo double. Then, in the fifth inning, with Max Grant (Canisius) on second base, Ignoffo reached on an error that allowed Grant to score and tie the game. Two innings later, Sorrentino walked and stole second and third base, which led to Ignoffo hitting a go-ahead single.

After acquiring the lead, the Nighthawks added to it in a big way in the eighth inning. With one out, Luca Tringiani (St. Joseph's) hit a single, then Clay Stearns walked (Troy). The next batter was Jonathan Hogart (Louisiana Tech), who hit an RBI single to make it 4-2. Johnny Decker (Marist) walked to load the bases, then Sorrentino hit an RBI single. Next, Grant hit a 2-run single, then Ignoffo wrapped the rally up with a 3-run home run to make it 10-2.

Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Mass.- The Vermont Mountaineers (17-1) continue to ride their dominant streak as they took down the North Adams Steeplecats (4-13) in a close 5-4 matchup.

Both teams were evenly matched in the second-inning as both teams got two runs each on the board. The Mountaineers began the inning with a walk for catcher Adam Retzbach (Lehigh) to get on base, then a single to allow shortstop Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) on base which would be followed by another single and a passed ball to get both Retzbach and Cox to head home. Later in the inning, Steeplecats' designated hitter Brady Mutz (Monmouth) got on base by an error and was brought home with a single by second baseman Kyle Hannon who later got a run of his own from a passed ball, fielder's choice, and a single to make it a tie game at 2-2.

The game got quiet for two innings before the Mountaineers got a leg up with their third run by designated hitter Tom Ruscitti (Fairleigh Dickinson) who made it home on another passed ball to take the lead, 3-2. Another scoring frenzy occurred in the eighth with both teams snagging two more runs each with Mountaineers' Cox getting his second of the night and center fielder Jack Cone (William & Mary) for the second run while the Steeplecats got Mutz and Hannon their second each for a close 5-4 score going into the final frame but would eventually end at that score.

Cox was on a roll for the Mountaineers as he had three hits to four at bats and had the most runs with two. Hannon was efficient as well as he had two runs with two hits to three at bats and tacked on an RBI.

The Mountaineers go back home to host the Danbury Westerners (8-9) tomorrow at 6:30pm as the Steeplecats will remain home for a West Divisional match against the Valley Blue Sox (10-7) at 5pm.

Valley Blue Sox 10 - Bristol Blues 9

W - Daniel Melnick 1-0 (Quinnipiac): 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

L - Peter Ostensen 1-1 (Fairfield): 2.0 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

S - Terry Murray 1 (RIC): 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

McKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass- The Valley Blue Sox (10-7) took home a crucial victory over the second-best, Bristol Blues (13-5) for a 10-9 upset.

The Blue Sox dominated quickly as they got three runs right off the bat with second baseman Lucas DiLuca (Eastern Illinois), right fielder Sam Franco (Purdue), and catcher Damaurys Rodriguez (Bryant) getting home for a 3-0 in the first. The Blues were able to tie up the game in the following inning with three runs by designated hitter Cal Parrillo (RIC) from a wild pitch, third baseman Jack Lynch (Manhattan) after the same wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, and center fielder Calvin McCall (Rhode island), but it was no use when Valley added two more runs by DiLuca and center fielder Jevon Mason (Southeast Missouri State) for a 5-3 score.

The Blue Sox ballooned their lead even further with five more runs in the next two innings to give them a cushion of 10-3. That line of runs was highlighted by Franco, Mason, and Rodriguez for their second run each on the night and third baseman Michael Casaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic) and left fielder Jack Krause (Bowling Green State) snagging one each.

The Blues then began to rally towards a comeback as their pitching squad of Joseph Rios (Central Connecticut State) and Peter Philips (Southern Connecticut State) would shut down the Blue Sox the rest of the night. The Blues got a spark of momentum on the offense in the fifth and seventh innings as they too put in five runs to cut the deficit to just one, 10-9. In that span, shortstop Jay Harry (Penn State) and right fielder Ryan Wilson (Davidson) recorded two runs each and second baseman Carson Swank (Yale) got his first. The Blues comeback would be cut short as Murray pitcher made the save to take the win.

The offense on both teams were tremendous as Valley had 10 RBIs with Rodriguez leading the category with three and the Blues had eight RBIs with Swank and Wilson tied with two each.

The Blue Sox will look to continue dominating in West Divisional matchups as they head on the road to face the North Adams Steeplecats (4-13) at 5pm while the Blues will quickly regroup to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at 6pm.
