Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-1, 3-1 PIFL) will host the Columbus Lions (4-1) in the first of back to back meetings between the two teams that currently sit atop the league leader board. Both teams only loss has been at the hands of the Nashville Venom. While the Steelhawks league best scoring defense (44 points/game) has been key for Lehigh Valley, it's been the Lion's league leading scoring offense (59.6 points/game) that they rely on. This week's game on Embassy Bank Field inside the PPL Center will kickoff at 7:05pm, Saturday, May 2nd.
Last week, Lehigh Valley made the short trip to Trenton, NJ in a rivalry matchup in which they held on to win 54-51. Hawks' quarterback Shane McSweeny has been solid so far this season; having yet to throw an interception (60.1% completion rate on 148 attempts), and leading the league in rushing (222yds, 9 tds). His top receiving target has been Brandon Renford (36 catches for 431 yds, 8 tds).
Columbus last played a tough Alabama team, running away with the game late in the second half, 74-53. Quarterback Casey Kacz (1,121 yds on 60.6 completion rate, 26 tds) has a monster target in 6'7 receiver Terrence Ebagua (43 catches for 661 yds) who averages 15.4 yards per catch and leads the league with 14 touchdown receptions. Columbus is led defensively by DB Roshawn Marshall who leads the Lion's with 25 tackles and three interceptions; DL Kendrick Washington has four sacks and three and a half tackles for a loss on the year.
The Lion's offense is used to scoring touchdowns, leading the league with 42, but they will be up against a Hawks defense that has created 22 (a league best) turnovers. Lehigh Valley's front five has been fierce, sacking opposing quarterbacks 21 times (2nd in the league); and the defensive backs have tallied 16 interceptions (1st in the league). DL Larry Ford leads the league in sacks (7.5). DBs Joe Powell and Jesse Cooper each have a league best five interceptions.
It should be an exciting matchup between the teams that hold the top two records in the league. One team succeeding on their offensive prowess, the other having a dangerous defense.
The Steelhawks are on the road in Columbus for their next game. They will be back on Embassy Bank field inside the PPL Center for a Sunday afternoon game, May 17th at 3:00pm to take on the Alabama Hammers. The game is presented by Embassy Bank and is will be "Salute to Heroes Night." The first 1,500 fans in the door will get a free sport bottle.
