The Greatest Show on the Diamond Is Back in North Adams

June 7, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

Thursday night's opener against the New Bedford Bay Sox will be the first of 21 regular season games at Joe Wolfe Field. In the team's first 14 seasons, they have created a tradition of playing postseason ball having made the playoffs 12 times and advanced past the opening round three times.

Head Coach Mike Armstrong and Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss have worked hard this off season to put together a group of players that they believe will continue that tradition. Over the last couple days, the players have arrived from all over the continent including places like Texas, California, and Canada for the summer. The only thing that is now left to happen is to play ball.

"I am happy that the first game is soon," said Coach Armstrong. "But the next few days are important for the players to get to know each other, get to know the Joe, and be ready to play."

With the team having just wrapped up its preseason picnic with the staff and host families, Coach Armstrong feels as though his excitement for the season to start has doubled.

"The host families are awesome," said Armstrong. "It starts to give the family feel right off the bat that we are here for the same reason and shoot for the same goal."

The SteepleCats have also had a tradition of getting players opportunities to play professional baseball. Over 90 former players have been drafted, nine of which have made to the big leagues including Bobby Wilson and Mike Ekstrom.

"It is a great honor to be able to work with anybody along their way towards professional baseball," said Armstrong. "But in general, my favorite part of coaching is giving the players something to take with them back to their school but make sure they have a good time while they are here."

If past seasons are any indication, the SteepleCats players will certainly have a good time with the support of one of the most passionate fanbases in the NECBL.
