Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
Lubbock, TX - Ladislav Kouba's pair of goals combined with Dov Grumet-Morris' goaltending performance led the Laredo Bucks to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Lubbock Cotton Kings Wednesday night at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
The shutout for Grumet-Morris was his first pro shutout and he completed the task by stopping 29 shots in his Laredo debut. It was just the second pro start for the Hobey Baker Finalist out of Harvard. His last start came on October 16th with the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage, as he allowed seven goals in his pro debut. He was assigned to Laredo by San Antonio earlier in the week.
For the tenth consecutive game, the Cotton Kings were unable to tally a goal in the opening frame, but the defense made sure to keep the Bucks off the board in the period. Laredo dominated the second period of play, out-shooting the Kings 15-9 and producing a pair of goals in the period. Ladislav Kouba produced the Bucks first goal and it was their CHL co-leading seventh shorthanded goal of the season. Kouba cashed in on a feed from Adam Rivet 6:17 into the period. Hans Benson tallied his first goal of the season with 5:04 remaining in the period by showing up at the right place at the right time. Benson slid into the top of the slots as a puck was being fed from behind the net and slammed the puck past Leslie for the 2-0 lead. Lubbock had four power play opportunities in the period, but couldn't muster an offensive pulse.
A two-minute long tilt between Lubbock's Matt Macdonald and Laredo's James Hiebert appeared to jump start the Kings early in the third period, but the tilt also sparked the Bucks and 1:20 into the third period, Adam Stefishen converted on a pass out of the corner and built the Bucks lead to 3-0. The Bucks closed the scoring with a power play tally by Kouba 9:05 into the period.
The loss evened the Kings record to 7-7-1 and it was the first time they allowed more than three goals in a game for the month of November. The meeting between the two clubs was the second consecutive meeting that resulted in a shutout, carrying over from last season. Lubbock is scoreless in their last 120-minutes against Laredo all-time. As for this season, the game is the third shutout suffered by the Cotton Kings. They will look to get back into the scoring trend Friday, as they return to the ice to host the Memphis RiverKings.
