St. Louis Steamers News Release
(St. Louis, Nov. 4, 2003) In a ceremony prior to the St. Louis Steamers vs. Milwaukee Wave Nov. 8 game at The Family Arena, the Steamers and Anheuser-Busch will team to honor the five living members from the 1950 U.S. national team starting 11 that inspired the coming movie, "The Game of Their Lives." The U.S. World Cup unit, which included five starters from St. Louis and six St. Louisans overall, defeated England 1-0 in Brazil in one of the great team upsets of the 20th century.
The five players to be honored are Harry Keough, Gino Pariani, Walter Bahr, Frank Borghi, and John Souza. Keough, Pariani, and Borghi are native St. Louisans. Bahr, a native of Philadelphia, is the father of former NFL kickers Matt and Chris Bahr. Souza is a native of Fall River, Mass. "The Game of Their Lives" was partially filmed this past summer in St. Louis. The production of the movie reunites director David Anspaugh and writer-producer Angelo Pizzo, who teamed on sports sagas "Hoosiers" and "Rudy."
Anheuser-Busch will present its Alabaster Eagle Award as well as commemorative rings to the five former World Cup players prior to the 7:05 p.m. kickoff to the St. Louis-Milwaukee MISL match.
Also, at halftime of the Steamers game, a St. Louis Old Time Hall of Fame "North vs. South" game will be held. Keough will coach the South squad, and Ray "Goose" Gilliam will lead the North squad. Other participants include Pat McBride, Ed Cody, Eddie Clear, Jim Nolan, Dick Niehaus, John Carenza, and Joe Carenza Jr. Gilliam, the president and chairman of the Old Time Hall of Fame Soccer Players Association of St. Louis, is helping organize the halftime event.
Single-game tickets ranging from $7 to $15 are available by calling MetroTix at 314-543-1111, or by visiting metrotix.com. Single-game tickets also are available at The Family Arena box office.
