The Deuce Scoop

May 19, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

BIG GUYS GETTING IT DONE FOR OKC: The defensive line of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz leads af2 with 22 sacks on the season and are on pace to challenge the all-time single season team sack record of 52 by the 2001 Carolina Rhinos. Currently averaging over three and a half sacks each game, the Yard Dawgz are on pace for 58 by season's end. Since linemen in Arena Football play both ways, it is interesting to note that this same group is tied for first in the league with only two sacks allowed, giving them the best sack margin in the league. In fact, the next closest team in sack ratio (Wichita) is 11 behind. Below is a look at the top 5 teams in sack margin:

TEAM GP SACKS SACKS ALLOWED +/-
Oklahoma City 6 22 2 +20
Wichita 6 18 9 +9
Cape Fear 6 10 3 +7
Tennessee Valley 6 10 4 +6
Bakersfield 6 11 6 +5

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY: Over the past two weeks, no quarterback in af2 has been hotter than Green Bay's Chris Greisen. With 15 touchdowns, 600 yards and only one interception, Greisen leads all gunslingers in yardage and TD/INT ratio over the past two weeks and the Blizzard have won two straight as a result. Below is a look at the Top 5 quarterbacks in passing yards and TD/INT ratio over the past two weeks.

PLAYER (TEAM) YARDS
Greisen (Green Bay) 600
Sauk (Louisville) 590
Claunch (San Diego) 557
Rowley (Columbus) 557
Hicks (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) 544

PLAYER TD/INT RATIO
Greisen (Green Bay) 15-1
Gordon (Quad City) 10-1
Perez (Laredo) 9-1
Claunch (San Diego) 9-1
Bryant (Albany) 8 (no INTs)

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: In the 2002 season Corey Hill (with Albany) set a professional football record by catching 161 passes, and then he tied the mark in the 2003 season. This year a new contender has stepped up to challenge the mark. Columbus' Adrian Cockfield leads af2 with 62 receptions through six games, averaging 10.33 catches per game. At this rate he'll hit 165 by the end of the season. Not far behind Cockfield is Tulsa's Mitch Allner (55 receptions) and Louisville's James Scott (52 receptions). Below is a look at the Top 5.

PLAYER (TEAM) GP REC REC/G
Cockfield (Columbus) 6 62 10.33
Allner (Tulsa) 6 55 9.17
Scott (Louisville) 6 52 8.67
Lane (Green Bay) 6 50 8.33
Dodge (Quad City) 7 48 6.86

AIR RAID: Last Saturday, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers' quarterback Tim Hicks attempted a season high 51 passes against Peoria. This performance puts him tied for fourth in af2 history for most pass attempts in a game. Former Pioneers' signal caller Chris Boden, threw 51 passes against the Mohegan Wolves last season and John Turman also attempted 51 for Charleston in 2003 against the Macon Knights. Hicks' performance is still well behind Matt Sauk's 60-pass game in 2001 against the Arkansas Twisters.

BLITZ BREAK INTO TOP 12: For the first time this season the Bakersfield Blitz have made it into the Top 12 in the af2 Coaches' Poll. Prior to this week's 11th place showing, the Blitz was the only team with a record better than .500 to not be part of the Top 12.

IT'S A LOCKE: Albany Conquest quarterback D Bryant knows the secret to throw for 300 yards in a game, find Tony Locke. Last week Bryant threw for 314 yards on only 13 completions. Amazingly eight of these completions went to Tony Locke. Lock recorded 212 of Bryant's 314 yards, meaning Locke accounted for 67.5% of the pass offense for the Conquest. In addition Locke caught four of Bryant's six touchdown passes. He racked up most of his yardage on these touchdown catches as his four touchdown passes were 18, 32, 40 and 40 yards individually. Locke's 212 receiving yards is a league high for 2004.

HOME SWEET HOME: After an off week last week, home teams rebounded in Week 7 by going 9-2. For the season home teams have gone 50-26 for a .658 win percentage. Last season home teams went 130-85-1 for a .604 win percentage. Overall in the history of af2 home teams have gone 501-330-1 for a .603 win percentage during the regular season. Below is a season-by-season chart:

SEASON HOME W-L-T HOME WIN %
2000 77-43-0 .642
2001 136-88-0 .607
2002 158-114-0 .581
2003 130-85-1 .604
2004 50-26-0 .658

SCORING LEADERS: Tulsa's Mitch Allner added 18 points to his season total to pass Randall Lane as the league's top scorer. Both Allner and Randall are still on pace to challenge the all-time single season scoring record of 284 points by Shon King during the 2000 season. Allner is on pace for 320, while Lane could hit 304. Below is a look at the Top 5 scorers in af2 through Week 7:

PLAYER TEAM GP POINTS
Mitch Allner TUL 6 120
Randall Lane GBB 6 114
Ronney Daniels TEN 6 102
Timon Marshall OKC 6 96
Jeff Hewitt QUA 7 96
