Steamwheelers rise to the top of latest poll

May 19, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - For the fifth time this season, the Quad City Steamwheelers have seized the No. 1 spot in the weekly af2 Coaches' Poll, the League office announced today.

The Steamwheelers received 276 points, including 18 first-place votes to land in the top spot. Coming in second in the Top 12 rankings with 247 points and five first-place votes was the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. The Tennessee Valley Vipers continued their climb up the poll by securing the third spot this week with 232 points and one first-place vote. The Wichita Stealth claimed the fourth spot, garnering 206 points and the only other first-place vote.

Along with the Steamwheelers, Pioneers and Vipers, four other teams moved up in the poll and two new teams cracked the Top 12 this week. The Birmingham Steeldogs moved from seventh to fifth this week and the Cape Fear Wildcats jumped from eighth to seventh. The Hawaiian Islanders improved from ninth to eighth and the Florida Firecats also moved up one spot from 11th to 10th. The Bakersfield Blitz made the Top 12 for the first time this season at the 11th spot, while the Memphis Xplorers landed in 12th position after falling out of the Top 12 for the past two weeks.

The Week 8 schedule features four matchups of Top 12 teams playing each other. The No. 2 Pioneers host the No. 7 Wildcats on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The No. 3 Vipers welcome the No. 10 Firecats to the Von Braun Center on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The No. 4 Stealth head to Oklahoma City to face the No. 9 Yard Dawgz on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Out West, the No. 11 Blitz host the No. 12 Xplorers on Saturday night at 10:00 p.m.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
