Edmonton Aviators News Release

Shortstop Ramon Castro tripled with two out in the top of the eighth inning, scoring pinch-runner Steve Stanley with the winning run as the Sacramento River Cats downed the Edmonton Trappers 5-3 to earn a split of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at TELUS Field. The Trappers won the first game 10-6 on the strength of a three-run home run by right fielder Ron Calloway that highlighted a five-run fifth inning. The loss in the second game was Trappers first defeat of the season in extra-innings. Ironically reliever Pat Mahomes (4-3) has earned the decision in all five of those contests. The first game was the continuation of the a suspended game from Friday night and was played in three hours and 43 minutes, the longest nine-inning game of the season. In actuality the game took more than 46 hours to complete, starting at 7:10 PM on Friday and ending at 5:33 PM on Sunday afternoon. Edmonton and Sacramento will also play a doubleheader on Monday to conclude this four-game series. The Trappers will start an eight-game road trip in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Sacramento got to Trapper starter Josh Karp for a single run in the top of the first inning of the suspended game. Shortstop Mike Rouse singled with one out in the inning and advanced to second when left fielder Mike Edwards drew a walk. First baseman Graham Koonce grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Edwards at second base, but Maicer Izturis' throw to first was wide allowing Rouse to scamper home with the first run of the game. First baseman Dan Johnson led off the second inning with a walk, advanced to third on a single by center fielder Mike Lockwood and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Esteban German. Right fielder Nick Swisher drew a two-out walk in the third inning. Trapper center fielder Brandon Watson then dropped a line drive off the bat of Johnson, allowing Swisher to move to third. A walk to Mike Rivera loaded the bases for Lockwood, who singled into right field, scoring Swisher and Johnson to give Sacramento a four-run lead.

Calloway was hit by a pitch to open the third inning. Luis Lopez singled to put runners on first and second. First baseman Jorge Toca doubled with one out, scoring Calloway with Edmonton's first run. With two down catcher Paul Hoover drew the Trappers to within one run of the River Cats with a double to left field that scored Lopez and Toca. Edmonton loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning and chased Ramos before the game was halted. They took the lead once action resumed on Sunday when German committed an error with two out in the fourth that allowed Izturis and Calloway to score. An RBI double by Lockwood in the fifth inning briefly tied the game at five. Calloway put the Trappers in front to stay with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Third baseman Scott Hodges and Toca added run-scoring singles later in the frame to give Edmonton a five-run advantage. Castro scored the final run of the game on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning.
