The Black Eyed Peas to phunk the house at the 93rd Grey Cup

September 7, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Toronto, ON (September 7, 2005) - The Canadian Football League (CFL), its newest partner Best Buy Canada, and Universal Music Canada announced today that Grammy Award-winning recording artists The Black Eyed Peas will take centre stage at halftime during this year's Grey Cup in Vancouver.

The Black Eyed Peas, who have topped the charts in Canada at number one for seven consecutive weeks this summer, will perform three songs during the halftime at Vancouver's BC Place on November 27th. The first single from the multi-platinum selling album Monkey Business "Don't Phunk With My Heart" is a number one hit song in Canada. The newest single, "Don't Lie" was just released and is already in the top five. The performance will also be covered live in broadcast by the Grey Cup's host broadcaster.

The Canadian Football League made the announcement today with Best Buy Canada, who joined forces with the CFL earlier this year as a new post-season partner. Best Buy will host a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 10 lucky CFL fans to win a trip for two to the 93rd Grey Cup. The Best Buy, CFL and The Black Eyed Peas promotional prize pack includes airfare, Grey Cup tickets, field level seats for the halftime show and a backstage pass to meet with The Black Eyed Peas.

"With their ever-expanding fan-base across Canada and around the globe, The Black Eye Peas bring to this year's Grey Cup halftime show the level of excitement and entertainment that fully complements Canada's most-watched sporting event," said Brent Scrimshaw, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Partnerships, CFL.

"We are honoured to be associated with the national treasure that is the Canadian Football League and the Grey Cup," commented Randy Lennox, President & CEO, Universal Music Canada. "The Black Eyed Peas have been on top of the Canadian charts all summer and are the perfect fit to perform the halftime show at the 93rd CFL championship game. We're also delighted that Jully Black will get the party started when she sings our national anthem prior to kickoff."

"Best Buy is excited about the opportunity to build our brand presence in Canada by connecting with fans at Canada's largest sporting event," said Anita Sehgal, Director Consumer Brand Marketing for Best Buy Canada Ltd. "We look forward to creating excitement for the halftime entertainment experience at this year's Grey Cup."

As part of today's announcement, the Canadian Football League and Universal Music Canada also introduced Canadian R&B star Jully Black as this year's national anthem singer for the Grey Cup championship game. The Juno-nominated Black's debut album, This is Me, is in stores now. In addition to opening for The Black Eyed Peas across the country this year, she has also opened for headliners 50-Cent, Jay-Z and Usher, and written songs recorded by Destiny's Child and Nas.
