Texas Winter League Update

February 24, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Michael Oros pitched a complete game four-hitter and Brian Williams hit a grand slam home run to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to a 10-2 victory against the Brownsville Stars Sunday afternoon at Harlingen Field.

Oros (1-0), the ace of the Sam Houston State staff in 2012 was in command throughout the game, not even allowing his first hit until the fourth inning. The right-hander gave up one earned run and one walk while striking out four and finished the season with a league-best 1.28 earned run average.

Williams' home run into the left field bullpen came with one out off Anthony Abbato (0-2) and gave the WhiteWings (10-5-2) a 5-0 lead. It also gave the Williams a share of the TWL home run lead for 2013.

Abbato was pitching because of Stars (7-7-3) manager Chris Paterson's strategy of using one pitcher for every inning to have his staff fresh for the postseason, which begin on Tuesday with a one-game playoff followed by a championship and consolation game on Wednesday.

The handlebar mustached Williams would finish with five runs batted in on the day, including one on a single to centerfield in the WhiteWings' 4-run fifth inning off David Sweeding. Cody Bishop added a 2-run triple in the frame to raise his average to .419 (26 for 62).

Jose Canseco was the designated hitter batting third in the WhiteWings lineup. He went hitless in three at bats with a walk.

ROADRUNNERS 6 THUNDER 2

Takeshi Shioga threw six scoreless innings of relief while Mike Mobbs collected three hits and no runs to insure the Edinburg Roadrunners would have a winning record in the 2013 Texas Winter League season with a 6-2 victory against the McAllen Thunder.

Shioga (1-2), a 27-year-old left-handed sidearm pitcher, shook off losses in his previous two outings to win the game. He allowed only five hits, walked two and only hit one batter while striking out three batters.

But he entered the game in the top of the second down 2-0 because Thunder (4-11-2) left fielder Albert Carpen lined a double off the head of starting pitcher Donald Whitt to bring home the first run of a 2-run first inning. After an inning of relief from Thomas Schull, normally the Roadrunners' (9-7-1) shortstop, Shioga came on to register his finest performance of the season.

Thunder pitcher Misop Baynun (0-2), meanwhile, did retire the Roadrunners in order in his league-leading sixth start of the season, including getting Jose Canseco to fly to centerfield. But his magic expired the following inning when the 44-year-old right-hander allowed four earned runs on three walks and hits prior to being relieved by Bryan Kloppe.

Canseco was the Roadrunners' designated hitter in the game. He collected a single in the fourth inning off Los Fresnos grad William Martinez to go 1 for 3 with a walk, thus finishing his six game stint in the TWL 3 for 20 with four walks, no home runs, and 1 RBI.

For the Thunder, other statistical highlights included Hiroki Itakura, who went 2 for 4 with a triple and run scored to finish with a league-leading .522 average (24 for 46), Carpen, whose two hits allowed him to finish with a .407 mark (22 for 54), Derrick Pyles, who was 1 for 2 with an RBI to finish at .438 (28 for 64), and Daiki Komori, whose hitless day with a run scored dropped him below .300 for the first time all season to .288.

Vince Coleman led all TWL hitters with 24 RBIs this season.

The postseason begins on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with a game between the WhiteWings and Thunder, followed by a 2 p.m. tilt with the Roadrunners hosting the Stars.

Probable starting pitchers are Trent Evins (4-0) for the WhiteWings against either Chris Phelan (0-2) or Justin Klipp (2-0) of the Thunder. Selby Brummett (1-2).
