Texas Winter League Update

February 17, 2013 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Cody Brooks hit two home runs and Trent Evins threw his third complete game in as many starts as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings routed the McAllen Thunder, 24-1, in the first game of a four-team Texas Winter League doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

The game became so lopsided it was called after five innings.

Evins (3-0) did not allow a hit until Todd Alls doubled to the opposite field with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Thunder's (4-6-1) only safety of the game. He finished with five strikeouts and walked one hitter.

By that time the score was 22-0, buoyed by a four hit performance by Brooks.

Brooks, the WhiteWings' (6-4-1) cleanup hitting catcher, hit a line drive 2-run homer to left field off lefthander Leo Madrid (0-1) with a strong wind blowing out in that direction to make the scored 8-0 in the top of the second. Brooks hit another 2-run shot into the bullpen behind the short left field wall at Harlingen Field to cap the scoring of the WhiteWings' 9-run third inning off Takati Sato that made the score 20-0.

Bishop finished with six runs driven in and four runs scored on the day and now leads the TWL in home runs. The WhiteWings' Curtis Camilli added three hits, three RBIs, and four runs.

The WhiteWings scored at least two runs in every inning. The Thunder's lone highlight of the game was when Eric Sheridan struck out four batters in the top of the fourth, and after the game he was traded to the WhiteWings for a fellow right-handed pitcher, Brownsville native William Martinez.

EDINBURG ROADRUNNERS 6 BROWNSVILLE STARS 3

Selby Brummett struck out 11 batters and threw a complete game six hitter as the Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the Brownsville Stars, 6-3.

"Does [Brummett] look like a guy who will be pitching professionally this year? The answer is yes," said Roadrunners manager Brooks Carey.

"I've been staying down with my pitches and using both sides of the plate," said Brummett, a former pitcher at the University of New Mexico who struggled in his Lobos career.

The complete game comes a start after Brummett could only pitch two innings before having to leave a game on Wednesday with arm stiffness.

"I ran a little bit, long tossed. That loosened up my arm," Brummett said. "It was tough to pitch on three days rest so early."

"Peak late, not early. That's what we preach here," said Carey.

After the Stars (5-5-1) scored an unearned run in the first inning, the Roadrunners (6-5) plated three runs in the bottom of the frame on run-scoring hits from Cody Bishop, Doug Freeman, and Tyler Hanks.

Hanks, a one-time pitcher in the Washington Nationals organization, was brought into the TWL by Brummett, a friend since preschool and one-time teammate at Spanish Fork High School in Utah.

The Roadrunners added three more runs in the third off starter Anthony Abbato (0-1) on run scoring singles from Freeman, Ginjiro Fujiwara, and Tsuyoshi Takahata.

Both Freeman and Fujiwara were hitting less than .125 entering the weekend. Fujiwara, the youngest player in the TWL at 18, now has nine hits in his last 13 at bats, while Freeman is 5 for 12.

The only earned run Brummett (1-2) allowed came when Austin Fraker doubled in Dave Angle with two outs in the fourth. Austin Newell and Alex Foltz pulled off a double steal of second base and home in the fifth inning to make the score 6-3, but Newell reached on an error in order to reach base and steal home.

The game was also highlighted by the performance of 43-year-old Brownsville chiropractor James Edwards, who served as the Stars' designated hitter and hit eighth. Edwards fanned three times, but was able to foul off three of Brummett's deliveries.

The Texas Winter League will resume on Tuesday as an extra day of games have been added to the schedule. The Stars and Thunder will meet at 11 a.m., with the Roadrunners and WhiteWings battling for first place in the standings at 2 p.m.
