Texas Winter League Update

February 13, 2013 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Quality pitching was the order of the day as the Texas Winter League resumed their season after two scheduled off days Wednesday at Harlingen Field.

In the first game of the four team doubleheader, Justin Klipp struck out 11 hitters in pitching a complete game, 3-2 McAllen Thunder victory against the Brownsville Stars.

In the second, Trent Evins pitched his second complete game in as many starts to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to a 4-2 victory against the Edinburg Roadrunners.

Klipp (2-0), a relief pitcher for Cal State-Fullerton's 2007 College World Series team, arrived at the ballpark less than an hour prior to the opening game's 11 a.m. first pitch and seemed to get stronger as the game went along. Though the right-hander allowing a leadoff triple down the first base line to Austin Newell and threw a wild pitch to allow him to score, Klipp retired the next eight hitters he faced after Newell.

Brownsville's Alex Foltz hit a book rule double to right in the third inning, and in the fourth inning Dave Angle doubled to left field and scored on a ground out and wild pitch, but Klipp would not allow another hitter to collect a hit for the remainder of the game. He walked three in his seven-inning stint.

Meanwhile, the Thunder (4-2-1) scored once with two outs in the first inning when Harlingen native Anthony Hinderman singled home Derrick Pyles off submarine right-hander Hiroki Kono. Kono himself threw a complete game, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out four in his six inning stint.

In the third inning, the Thunder took a 2-1 lead when Stars (3-4) second baseman Masahiro Takahata's peg to first on a double play ball was wild, allowing Masanari Kato to score from second. The winning run was scored an inning later when Jeff Allen doubled home Albert Carpen, who had tripled to center in the previous at bat, pulling the Kono pitch in the gap in right center.

With Sean Gaughan at third base representing the tying run, Klipp got Cody Brooks to fly to right field to end the game to end the Stars' three game winning streak and put the Thunder in first place.

In the second game, Evins (2-0) scattered nine hits and did not walk or hit a batter in recording the victory.

The WhiteWings (2-4-1) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second off Selby Brummett when Cody Bishop tripled down the first base line with the bases loaded. Bishop is now hitting .577 for the WhiteWings this season.

Thomas Schull hit a home run in the top of the third when he bounced a fly ball off the top of the 20-foot wall in right field over the fence to pull the Roadrunners (4-3) within a run of the lead.

After Brummett was taken out of the game with arm stiffness before the third, Donald Whitt then allowed an unearned run when Bobby Villante, who had reached on an error, scored on Kori Melo's two out hit.

The Roadrunners and Stars meet at 11 a.m. and WhiteWings and Thunder at 2 p.m. Thursday.
