
Texas Winter League Awards Announced

The Texas Winter League announced their awards at their end-of-season banquet Wednesday afternoon at Colletti's Restaurant in Harlingen.
Cody Bishop won the TWL's Most Valuable Player Award with a .417 batting average, one home run, and 14 RBIs out of his leadoff spot in the order for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. The centerfielder also collected 10 extra base hits and scored 17 runs for the WhiteWings.
Steve Nikonchik of the Brownsville Stars was named the league's top pitcher, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.33 ERA. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed only 16 hits in 27 innings while striking out 41 batters and walking only six and throwing two complete games in five starts.
The WhiteWings' shortstop, Kori Melo was named as the best defensive player, while left-handed pitcher Takeshi Shioga was named the most improved player after throwing six shutout innings in his last appearance, a 6-2 victory against the McAllen Thunder on Feb. 24. This came after allowing five runs in his first appearance, a two-inning stint in an 8-4 loss to the WhiteWings on Feb. 7.
Greg Tagert of the league champion Thunder was named "Manager of the Year."
The awards were chosen by the TWL managers and coaches.
