Texas Wildcatters News Release

Beaumont, TX (May 7, 2003) - Last month the Texas Wildcatters Hockey Team and The Beaumont Enterprise launched a "Name the Mascot" contest for local children to nickname the team's official mascot. The winning name, Gusher, was submitted by seven year old Samantha Gaudet of Nederland. As the grand prizewinner, the first official mascot appearance was at Samantha's school. She will also receive a four-pack of tickets to the Texas Wildcatters' home opener, a team-autographed hockey stick, an official game puck, and a T-shirt.

Stacy Thompson, director of community relations for the Texas Wildcatters said that there were over 500 entries submitted and more than a dozen had suggested the name Gusher. Samantha's name was randomly drawn from those entries making her the grand prizewinner. When asked how she came up with the name, Samantha said she chose "Gusher" in honor of the Spindletop gusher of 1901.

Gusher, a large cat dressed in traditional wildcatter clothes, made his debut appearance during a special school assembly at Highland Park Elementary, 200 South 6th Street in Nederland on Wednesday, May 7th at 2:00 p.m. The entire school gathered at Highland Park's gymnasium as Gusher made his entrance in grand style. After the assembly, Gusher made his way to Samanatha's first grade classroom with Ms. Smith where the kids shared a special cake with the new mascot of the Wildcatters.

Gusher will be available for appearances at local schools, events and charity functions. If you would like to have Gusher appear at your event, please contact the Wildcatters' office at least 3-4 weeks prior by calling (409) 839-2344.

The Texas Wildcatters Professional Hockey Team is a new member of the East Coast Hockey League. They will begin their inaugural season in late October 2003 at the new state-of-the-art arena at the Southeast Texas Entertainment Complex just off Interstate 10 in Beaumont, Texas. There is still time to reserve your Texas Wildcatters Season Tickets for the inaugural 2003-2004 season.
