Texas Rangers Sign Ex-Pelican Edwar Ramirez

Former Pelicans standout closer Edwar Ramirez continues his Major League career as he recently signed with the Texas Rangers. The Rangers announced Tuesday the signing of Ramirez from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. Ramirez turns 29 at the end of March and begins his fourth year of Major League duty.

Ramirez, 6'3 - 150, is a right-handed reliever that started as a non-drafted free agent with the Angels in 2001. The Angels released him in 2004 and Ramirez joined the Pensacola Pelicans in 2005. Ramirez had one of his best professional seasons with the Pelicans. He finished with a 2-2 record, a franchise best 1.45 ERA, and a 6.2 strikeout to walk ratio. The slender right-hander recorded 93 strikeouts to 15 walks and opposing batters hit just.170 against him in 62 innings of relief.

His complete Major League record is 6-2 with a 5.22 ERA, two saves, and 116 strikeouts through 98 1/3 innings in 96 appearances with the Yankees from 2007-09. His best season came in 2008 going 5-1 with a 3.55 ERA while striking out 63 and saving one through 55 1/3 innings in 55 games. Ramirez had a strike out per nine innings average of 10.25 in 2008 ranking him seventh among Major League relievers. His average against for 2008 was a trim.215. The Yankees designated Ramirez for assignment freeing up their 40 man roster for 2010 allowing the Rangers to pick him up to help out the bullpen.
