Victoriaville Tigres News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals opened a three-game series with their division rivals, the St. George Roadrunners in a Friday evening contest at Royal Athletic Park. Taking to the mound for Victoria was Anthony Pluta (4-3), who matched up against Alex Foltz (0-1) for St. George.

Victoria opened the scoring in the first inning, with a Wilver Perez single, followed by a home run from Henry Calderon. The Calderon blast ended up being a solo shot as Perez was caught in a rundown, while trying to steal second base.

Tying the game at 1-1 in the third frame were the visiting Roadrunners. Starting pitcher, Foltz, hit a double to centre field, followed by a single from Tim Rotola, and an error from Seals' second baseman Jerry Madueno to score Foltz from third.

Retaking the lead in the bottom half of the third were the Seals, on an error, and two singles. Perez advanced to first on an error from third baseman Nick Fitzgerald, followed by singles from Calderon, and Terrence McClain. Perez would catch St. George sleeping, by stealing home, while the infield took its time getting the ball back to Foltz.

The Seals extended their advantage in the fourth on a walk to Colin Moro, a single from Madueno, and an error from shortstop Alex Sumner that would bring Moro home for the 3-1 score.

Victoria added to their lead in the bottom half of the sixth when Madueno was walked by reliever, Lou Bernardi. The St. George pitcher committed a throwing error to first, while trying to pick of Madueno, allowing the Seals' second baseman to advance to third. Perez would then hit an RBI single to give the home side a 4-1 advantage.

Adding their fifth run of the contest, were the Seals in the seventh frame on a double, error, and sacrifice fly. McClain hit a lead-off double, with Josh Arhart advancing to second on an error from centre fielder Tim Rotola. Brian Rios would then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to round out the scoring for the game and hand the Seals a 5-1 victory.

Anthony Pluta picked up his fifth win of the season allowing one run on five hits, while striking out six in five innings of work. Alex Foltz recorded the loss for St. George, giving up three runs on six hits while retiring four batters. Terrence McClain powered the Seals' offence going 3-for-3 with one run, while Alex Sumner provided the scoring for the Roadrunners going 2-for-4 in a losing effort.

The Seals and Roadrunners continue their three game set tomorrow night at Royal Athletic Park. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. (PT), and tickets are available by calling (250) 220-7777, or online via www.victoriaseals.ca. The contest will also be broadcast through the Seals website, beginning ten minutes before the scheduled first pitch! (Game story written by Adam McKinnon)
