Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned DS Deon Giddens by the league office.
Giddens attended Tennessee State University, putting up impressive numbers during his junior and senior seasons at the cornerback position. As a junior, Giddens picked off five passes, broke up seven, and added 78 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss. He also forced three fumbles that season. During his senior year with the Tigers, Giddens recorded 52 total tackles, defended six passes, and added four more interceptions to his collegiate total.
"Deon Giddens was a highly productive college player who should be able to help us at the defensive specialist position," stated Memphis Head Coach Danton Barto.
Giddens is the second Tiger to come to the Xplorers during this off-season. Earlier this month Scott Cunningham was assigned to the Xplorers.
Xplorers Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer added the following thoughts on Giddens. "Combined with old college teammate Scott Cunningham, Deon provides much needed depth at one of the toughest positions to find in the Arena League, DS. After having spent some time with the Buffalo Bills, Deon will be able show some of our guys what kind of skills they are looking for at the next level."
Giddens was in camp with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL prior to the start of the 2004 season, and was later released.
Earlier this month the Xplorers announced they will have an open on February 5th between 12:00pm and 4:00pm at the Southaven Park and Recreation Center located at 3335 Pine Tar Alley.
The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For group and season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
