Ten Run Forth Give Joliet Win

FARGO, ND- The Joliet JackHammers (18-30) scored 10 runs in the 4th inning to power their way to an 11-4 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (21-22) before 3,554 fans on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. Joliet got home runs from DH Tydus Meadows (2) (2-4), RF Tim Alberts (2-5) and 1B Freddie Thon (3-5) on the afternoon.

Fargo-Moorhead pushed across two runs in the 1st inning against Joliet RHP Derek Barrows (1-0). SS Zach Penprase (0-3) earned a one-out walk and proceeded to steal second and third base. CF Nic Jackson (2-5) ripped an RBI single to score Penprase for a 1-0 RedHawks lead.

Jackson stole second base and scored on a single by LF Justin Justice (2-4) for a 2-0 lead.

The RedHawks added another run in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by 1B Alan Rick (2-4) for a 3-0 lead.

The JackHammers came roaring back in the 4th inning with a 13-batter inning. Meadows led it off with a solo home run against RedHawks LHP Broc Coffman. Alberts hit a double and scored on a double by Thon. Thon advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Coffman. C Phil Avlas (0-4) reached base on an error.

2B Gay Harris (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Thon and tie the game at 3-3. A wild pitch advanced Avlas to third base and Harris to second base. A walk to CF Adam Klein (0-4) loaded the bases.

SS Kevin Rios (1-4) smacked an RBI single to score Avlas and give Joliet a 4-3 lead.

The bases remained loaded for LF Brad Correll (0-4), who grounded into a double play that allowed Harris to score from third base and make it a 5-3 JackHammers advantage.

Alberts followed with a three-run home run later in the inning. It was his first home run of the season and gave the JackHammers a 9-3 lead. Thon hit a solo home run to round out the scoring at 10-3.

The JackHammers added another insurance run in the 6th inning when Meadows hit a solo shot over the center field wall for an 11-3 advantage.

Barrows worked five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out five to pick up his first victory of the season.

The JackHammers will take three days off before returning on Thursday, July 9th against the Schaumburg Flyers at Silver Cross Field at 7:05 p.m. On Tuesday, the JackHammers host the 2009 Northern League Field of All-Stars Game presented by Farmers Insurance at 7:05 p.m. Special pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Starting pitchers have not been announced for the Great Lakes (Joliet, Gary and Schaumburg) and Great Plains (Kansas City, Fargo-Moorhead, and Winnipeg) All-Star teams.
