Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Vince Harrison hit his fourth home run of the season and Ed Almonte gave up just two runs in eight strong innings as the Flyers beat the T-Bones 6-2 to wrap of the first half of the season.

For the second game in a row, Schaumburg took the lead in the bottom of the first. Travis Ezi roped a triple to left center and scored on Jose Valdez's RBI single. Valdez extended his hit streak to 14, the longest current streak in the Northern League. Valdez then scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Felix Jose.

The T-Bones cut the lead in half in the top of the third when an Almonte wild pitch scored Jacob Blackwood, but the Flyers would answer right back in the bottom half of the third. Victor Ferrante extended his hit streak to nine games with an RBI triple that scored Jose. Craig Maddox continued his incredible first week with the Flyers with an RBI double scoring Ferrante. Maddox's hit streak is now eight games-each game he has played for Schaumburg.

Back-to-back doubles for the T-Bones cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth as Jim Fasano scored Craig Hurba. The Flyers continued to answer, though, with a run in the bottom of the fourth by way of a little small ball. Travis Brown reached on a single, stole second, was bunted to third by Ezi, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Valdez.

Harrison put the exclamation point on an all-around great game for the Flyers. The third baseman jacked his fourth homer of the season to left center, a solo shot, to extend the lead to 6-2.

Those runs were plenty for Almonte. The All-Star came off his worst outing of the season to shut down the T-Bones, throwing eight innings, giving up two runs, and striking out two, picking up the win.

Jeff Dunbar came in from left field to pitch the ninth. He gave up a league-leading 16th home run for Ryan Fox, but struck out two T-Bones in a row to end the game. The Flyers conclude the first half of the season at 22-22, while the T-Bones fall to 22-23.

Almonte improves to 4-4 on the season and Justin James gets the loss, falling to 3-5.

The Flyers now head into the All-Star break. The Northern League All-Star Game will be Tuesday night in Joliet at 7pm, and nine Flyers will be participating. Schaumburg begins the second half of the season with a four-game series in Joliet at Silver Cross Field, beginning on Thursday night at 7pm.
