Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery lost to the Puerto Rico Islanders by a score of one goal to none tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,055. Mark Oehlman scored the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute and despite outshooting the Islanders 21 to 3, the Battery could not find a way to salvage the game.

The loss was Charleston's first of the season and drops the Battery to a record pf 2-1-1, 7 points, 5th position in the USL First Division. Puerto Rico moves up to 4th spot with a record of 3-2-1, 10 points.

The Battery started well and created a chance in the 7th minute. Ben Hollingsworth slipped a pass to Omar Daley on the right side. Daley beat his defender to the inside but his right-footed attempt missed wide right.

In the 16th minute Charleston threatened again after earning a corner-kick. The ball was played in, then deflected out to midfielder Luke Vercollone. Vercollone took a touch then shot, but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Puerto Rico's goal came in the 22nd minute. Midfielder Gustavo Barros played a long ball forward from deep in the Islanders half. Forward Mark Oehlman ran onto the pass and slotted past Keith Wiggins from ten yards out.

In the 31st minute Gavin Glinton ran onto a looping Hollingsworth pass. He controlled the ball but his shot missed just left of the goal.

The second-half was punctuated by continual stoppages as the Puerto Rico players fouled, were fouled or, more often, simulated being fouled. In all 12 yellow cards were issued; Battery defender Shane Crawford received two yellow's and was ejected from the game in the 74th minute.

Despite the man disadvantage Charleston continued to press and came close on several occasions. Substitute midfielder Lazo Alavanja hit the post and Glinton also forced a reaction save from Kennedy late in the game.

Charleston is home again next Saturday night as the Atlanta Silverbacks come to town; gates open at 6:30 PM, kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
