
Team Granitza Defeats Team Steffenhagen 4-1 in Chicago Soccer Legends Game

Chicago (Sunday, April 3, 2005) â Team Granitza defeated Team Steffenhagen 4-1 this afternoon at the Chicago Soccer Legends Game presented by the Chicago Storm at the UIC Pavilion. Chicago Sting superstar Karl-Heinz Granitza scored a goal and two assists, including a helper on the game-winner by Mirko Castillo to take the first-ever Chicago Soccer Legends Game crown.
Team Granitza opened the scoring at 4:28 of the first half when Storm Assistant Coach Jeff Kraft found Chicago Fire Head Coach Dave Sarachan along the left wing. Sarachan blasted a high shot past Team Steffenhagen goalkeeper Brad Hauter to give Team Granitza a 1-0 lead.
The yellow and black donned Team Granitza extended their lead when former Chicago Power playmaker Mirko Castillo scored at 9:32 of the first half. Granitza found Castillo and he slotted a shot past Hauter to make it 2-0.
Granitza made it 3-0 at 5:50 of the second half. Chicago Fire Assistant Coach Denis Hamlett sent a pass across the face of the goal to a wide-open Granitza. The Storm's General Sales Manager quickly hit a right-footed shot past Team Steffenhagen goalkeeper Yaro Dachniwsky.
Team Steffenhagen battled back and cut into Team Granitza's lead 3-1. Former Chicago Power defender Tommy Isirov fired a shot that crashed off of the glass above the goal. The rebound fell to Storm Chairman and CEO Viktor Jakovljevic and he pounded a shot past Team Granitza goalkeeper Daryl Shore.
Team Granitza iced the game at 10:30 of the second half when Granitza found Mark Stein at the back post with a pass. Stein one-timed a shot past Dachniwsky to extend the lead to 4-1.
Dachniwsky tallied several saves, including a point-blank attempt from Granitza that slammed off of the chest of the goalkeeper. Later in the second half, Dachniwsky smothered an attempt by Storm Head Coach Frank Klopas to thwart Team Granitza's offense.
The teams played two 12-minute halves with teams consisting of Chicago Soccer Legends from the Chicago Sting, Power, Fire, Storm, Horizons and Shoccers.
