Tampa's Late Rally Falls Short In Loss To Bradenton

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Tarpons (10-24) entered the ninth inning down one run and loaded the bases, trying to complete the comeback against the Bradenton Marauders (16-18) on Tuesday night at GMS Field. C Tomas Frick stepped up to the plate, trying to be the hero with two away. He lined a bullet to right field; however, it hung up just enough to find Sergi Campana's glove in right field, halting Tampa's comeback as Bradenton held on for the victory, 4-3.
RHP Gabriel Barbosa (4.0IP, 6H, 4ER, 0BB, 8K, 1HR, HP) faced the minimum over three innings before unraveling in the fourth. In the fourth, Barbosa gave up four runs, which was all the Marauders needed to get the victory. The right-hander had his swing-and-miss stuff working, striking out eight in his four-plus innings of work. Barbosa used a six-pitch mix to generate a whiff rate of 42% on the night.
Keiner Delgado singled to right field to open the fourth, and with two away, Esmerlyn Valdez got hit by a pitch, and Omar Alfonzo singled to bring in Delgado. Solomon Maguire provided the big blow, launching a three-run home run over the right field wall to give Bradenton a four-run lead.
The Tarpons got one run back in the fourth thanks to LF Jackson Castillo . Castillo blasted a 389-foot solo home run to right center field to pull Tampa back within three.
Tampa rallied back in the eighth. 1B Dylan Jasso singled, and Castillo walked to start the frame. CF Willy Montero bounced into a 5-4 fielder's choice, which put runners on the corners. RF Coby Morales walked to load the bases and bring up Tampa's hottest hitter, Frick. Frick came through and cut the lead to two with a single off the pitcher. After a strikeout, the bases remained loaded for pinch-hitter DH Manuel Palencia . Palencia chopped a weak grounder to third base that he hustled out for an infield single, which scored W. Montero to cut the deficit to one. The bases remained loaded for 3B Hans Montero , who worked the count full but struck out to end the rally and leave the bases loaded.
With last licks in the ninth, Tampa loaded the bases all via the free pass. The hero of the eighth inning, Frick, stepped up again, trying to send the fans home happy. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Frick lined a 98.3 MPH to right field, but it hung up, ending Tampa's rally.
The Tarpons will be back at it tomorrow against the Marauders, with RHP Luis Serna on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with wacky deals coming your way for Wacky Deal Wednesday.
