TAMPA BAY HOSTS SOUL, LOOKS TO GET BACK IN WIN COLUMN

After embarking on their first road trip of the season, the Tampa Bay
Storm return home for a contest against the expansion Philadelphia Soul.
The Storm have dropped back-to-back contests after winning the season
opener, losing hard-fought games against Georgia and Austin. Tampa
Bay's 1-2 start is reminiscent of the 1-2 start the team got off to last year
before rebounding for eight straight victories and eventually winning the
ArenaBowl. If a similar winning streak is to start this week, the Storm will
have to knock off Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul. The Soul are coached
by former Grand Rapids Rampage head coach Michael Trigg and feature a
number of former Grand Rapids players, including WR/DBs Ricky Ross and
Joseph Todd and FB/LB Chris Ryan.

STORM CAN'T PUNCH IT IN, FALL 56-48

The Austin Wranglers broke up a Storm 4th-and-goal pass from the threeyard
line with three seconds left in the game to wrap up their first-ever
home win and drop the Storm to 1-2 on the young season. Tampa Bay
was denied three times inside the 15-yard line in the game and had
trouble getting touchdowns inside the red zone, helping to lead to the loss.
Tampa Bay quarterback Shane Stafford came up big once again, throwing
for 306 yards and five touchdowns on 25-of-40 passing. Freddie Solomon
and TT Toliver each had a pair of touchdown receptions in the contest,
and Lawrence Samuels topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the first
time this season, hauling in eight passes for 102 yards. Former Storm
quarterback John Kaleo led the Austin offense, completing 18-of-29 passes
for 263 yards and six touchdowns. Darryl Hammond had three touchdown
receptions, while Shannon Culver caught five passes for 113 yards and two
TDs.

STORM EXPANSION BLUES

The fact that the Philadelphia Soul is an expansion franchise in 2004 may
not be great news for the Storm given their recent history against firstyear
teams. Last Sunday's loss to the Austin Wranglers gave Tampa Bay
its second straight loss to an expansion team. Last season the Storm
became just the second victim of the Colorado Crush, who won just two
games in their inaugural season. The Storm are now 26-6 all-time against
expansion teams, with three of those six losses coming in the past three
seasons. The only expansion teams to defeat the Storm have been the
Orlando Predators (1992), Las Vegas Sting (1994), New Jersey Red Dogs
(1997), Dallas Desperados (2002), Colorado Crush (2003), and Austin
Wranglers (2004). Following Sunday's game against Philadelphia, Tampa
Bay has three more contests against expansion teams, two against the
New Orleans VooDoo and one more against the Austin Wranglers.

DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN

Haven't we seen this before? This season the Storm have stumbled to a
1-2 start out of the gate. The Storm also started 1-2 in 2003, a year in
which the team rebounded to win eight straight games and eventually win
the ArenaBowl championship. But that's not the only comparison between
the starts of this season and last season.

This season the Storm won their season opener against a Southern
Division team and then lost back-to-back contests. Last season the Storm
won their season opener against a Southern Division team and then lost
two straight. This year the Storm lost in Week 3 to the Austin Wranglers,
a new team playing their first-ever home game. Last year the Storm lost
to Las Vegas in Week 3, a new team playing their first-ever home game.

This year the Storm have had kicker problems to start the season. Last
year the Storm had kicker problems to start the season. This season the
Storm will try to bounce back from the 1-2 start against a team coached
by Michael Trigg. Last year the Storm bounced back from the 1-2 start by
beating Grand Rapids, a team coached by Michael Trigg.

BUT THEN AGAIN, THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES TOO

Though there are some comparisons to the 1-2 starts by the Storm, there
are also some glaring differences, mainly on the defensive side of the ball.
Last season the Storm had one of the top defenses in the AFL. This
season the Storm defense has yet to flex its muscle, giving up an average
of 55.7 points per game and 273.0 yards per game. The Storm defense
ranks 18th in the 19-team league in points per game, 17th in passing yards
per game and rushing yards per attempt, and 16th in yards per play. The
Tampa bay defense also ranks in the bottom half of the league in passing
yards per play and third down efficiency.

STILL NO PICKS

For the third straight game, the Tampa Bay defense was held without an
interception Sunday against Austin. That stat points to a bigger problem
for Tampa Bay, which ranks 13th in the league with a -2 turnover margin.
The Storm have forced two turnovers, both fumbles, and have turned the
ball over four times – three fumbles and an interception. The Storm's two
forced turnovers ranks 13th in the league, while the four turnovers by the
Storm ranks 11th in the league. Through three games last season the
Storm defense forced nine turnovers (five
interceptions and four fumbles) and
committed five turnovers for a +4 turnover
margin. This season through three games a
+4 turnover margin would be the third-best
in the league.

KICKING GAME WOES

Much like the Storm defense, the Tampa
Bay special teams have gotten off to a slow
start in 2004. Storm kicker Ian Howfield
ranks fourth in the league in scoring among
kickers, but he has missed some crucial
extra point and field goal tries in recent
weeks. Only two kickers have missed more
extra points this season than Howfield –
New York's Pete Elezovic and Philadelphia's
Ken Hinsley, who is filling in for the injured
Brian Gowins.

But the kicker has not been the only
struggle for the Storm special teams.
Tampa Bay ranks 17th in the league in
kickoff return average, getting 15.3 yards
per return. Storm opponents are averaging
20.6 yards per returns, which is the
seventh-best average in the league. The
Storm's average starting field position
following a kickoff this season has been the
10.3 yard line. The Storm have started 11
drives following kickoffs inside the 10-yard
line. Tampa Bay opponents' average field
position following kickoffs has been the 14.9
yard line. Tampa Bay opponents have also
started 11 drives inside the 10 yard line
following kickoffs.

TURNED AWAY

Tampa Bay Storm head coach Tim Marcum
pointed to three crucial possessions inside
the 15-yard line in which his offense failed
to score as big reasons for the Storm's loss
to the Wranglers last Sunday. In the first
quarter the Storm got down to the Austin
13-yard line before Lawrence Samuels was
stripped of the football. Then in the fourth
quarter Howfield missed an 18-yard field
goal that would have put Tampa Bay on
top, 51-49, with 2:45 left in the game and
the Storm were denied on fourth-and-goal
from the four-yard line when the Austin
defense broke up a Stafford pass in the
endzone with three seconds left in the game.

Tampa Bay had two other possessions inside
the 10-yard line in which it failed to score
touchdowns on Sunday, instead having to settle
for field goals. Howefield connected on kicks of
21 and 26 yards, but instead of those drives
producing 14 points, the Storm were only able
to manage six.

This season Tampa Bay has struggled on both
sides of the ball inside the red zone. In 16
offensive possessions, the Storm have scored
touchdowns only nine times for a league-worst
56.3%. On the other hand, opposing offenses
have been inside the red zone 11 times against
the Storm defense and have scored 11
touchdowns, also a league-worst.

THEY'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SCORE

A pair of Storm linemen scored their first AFL
touchdowns last weekend against Austin.
Ernest Certain caught a pass from his tight end
position and raced 15 yards for a touchdown,
bowling over a few Austin would-be tacklers in
the process. The reception was the third career
catch for Certain, who had two receptions for 28
yards last season. Additionally, Storm lineman
Shawn King scored his first touchdown in his
first career AFL game. King, who was covering
the opening kickoff of the third quarter for the
Storm, recovered the ball after it bounded off of
the iron and returned it nine yards for a
touchdown.

300 CLUB

Tampa Bay quarterback Shane Stafford threw
for a season-high 306 yards against Austin,
marking the second straight week he threw for
over 300 yards in a game. Stafford, who
completed 25-of-40 passes and tossed five
touchdown passes, is also the only quarterback
in the league this season who has thrown for
over 300 yards more than once, and one of only
three quarterbacks who has topped the 300-
yard passing mark this year.

The back-to-back 300-yard passing games
marked the first time in his career that Stafford
has thrown for 300 yards in consecutive weeks.
In fact, prior to this season Stafford had only
thrown for more than 300 yards in a game once
– on July 21, 2001, when he had 313 passing yards against New
Jersey. Last season Storm quarterback John Kaleo threw for 300
yards in back-to-back weeks twice, but never had three consecutive
weeks of 300 yards passing outings.

Stafford ranks as one of the top quarterbacks in the league this
season. He is second in attempts (103), passing yards (768), and
passing touchdowns (18), third in completions (65), and fifth in
quarterback rating (121.3).

STILL ON TOP

After being shut out in the first half against Austin, Tampa Bay
offensive specialist Freddie Solomon hauled in a pair of touchdown
passes in the second half and finished the game with four catches for
47 yards. While those totals were lower that Solomon's normal
production, he has still proven to be one of the elite receivers in the
game. His two touchdown catches gave him 10 for the season, the
most in the league. He also leads the league in scoring with 60 points.

His closest competition entering Week 4 is Carolina WR/DB Damien
Groce and Dallas WR/DB Jason Shelley, both of whom have 48 points
this season.

Solomon's 19 receptions this season ranks ninth in the league, and his
228 receiving yards put him 11th in the AFL in that category. He also
still owns the AFL season-high with 30 points scored in a game
(February 13 vs Georgia).

RUSHING UP THE CHARTS

Tampa Bay FB/LB David White rushed for a season-high 23 yards last
Sunday against Austin. That total pushed White's season total for
rushing yards to 41, which is fifth in the AFL this year. White also
moved up the Tampa Bay Storm career rushing yards list. White's
effort last Sunday allowed him to jump ahead of two players on that
list – Travis Pearson and Basil Proctor. White, who has 198 career
rushing yards with the Storm, is now in seventh place all-time, just
two yards shy of sixth place Ivan Ceasar's 200 career rushing yards.

White also has 15 career rushing touchdowns with the Storm. That
places him fifth on the Storm all-time list, tied with Basil Proctor. He
needs three rushing touchdowns to tie Tony Jones for fourth place on
the Storm all-time list.

FAMILIAR FACES

The Philadelphia Soul have a pair of players that won championship
rings with the Storm last season. WR/DB Keita Crespina was traded to
Philadelphia in the off-season, and WR/LB Gary Compton was traded
to the Soul during training camp. Both players were traded for future
considerations. Crespina has played in all three games this season for
Philadelphia, while Compton injured his knee in Week 2 and will not
play this week against the Storm.

STAR POWER

In what has become an increasing trend among AFL teams, the
Philadelphia Soul is known more by their owner than their accomplishments on the field. The Soul are owned in part by
recording artist Jon Bon Jovi, leader of the rock band Bon Jovi. Other part owners of the Soul are Craig Spencer, a
Philadelphia-area developer who graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and Richie Sambora, Bon
Jovi's drummer. The President of the Soul is former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski.

ANOTHER NUMBER GOING TO THE RAFTERS

The Tampa Bay Storm will retire the No. 20 worn by former Storm WR/LB Stevie Thomas Sunday before the game
against Philadelphia. Thomas is the Storm's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He
is also second in all-purpose yards and missed field goal return yards, third in kickoff return yards and combined returned
yards, fifth in interceptions, and ninth in tackles.

Thomas ranks fourth in AFL history in yards per catch, seventh in receiving yards, eighth in scoring, and eighth in
receiving touchdowns.

Thomas played for the Storm from 1991-1999, winning four championships with Tampa Bay. He won a fifth
championship with the Orlando Predators in 2000 and concluded his career in 2001 with the New Jersey Gladiators.

MORE MILESTONES FOR SAMUELS

Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels hit two career milestones in the Storm's Week 2 loss to the
Georgia Force and inched closer to overtaking one of the Storm all-time greats on the team's career receiving yards list.

Samuels hauled in seven catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia. Those numbers allowed him to
eclipse 400 career receptions and 5,000 career receiving yards. Samuels is second all-time in Storm history in receptions
and ranks third in Storm history in receiving yards.

HALF A CENTURY

When Clif Dell hauled in his 22-yard touchdown reception in Week One against Orlando, he recorded his tenth receiving
touchdown as a member of the Storm and his 50th career receiving touchdown. Dell, in his second season with Tampa
Bay, scored the touchdown against his former team and the organization for which he scored 40 of those 50 touchdowns.

Dell played with the Predators from 1999-2002, with his best career season coming in his final year in Orlando. That
season he caught 76 passes for 995 yards and 22 touchdowns.

NEW FACES

Though the Storm return many of the impact players from last season's ArenaBowl champion team, there are a number
of new faces on the Storm's opening night roster. Of the 29 players on the opening night roster (24-man roster and
Injured Reserve), 13 of those players were not with the Storm for the ArenaBowl, including seven players who played in
the game against Orlando. Those players who played last week but were not on the ArenaBowl roster include QB Shane
Stafford, WR/DB Jonathan Ordway, OL/DLs Evan Pilgrim and Cyron Brown, DSs Shea Showers and Del Lee, and K Ian
Howfield. Others new to the roster this season include QB Stoney Case, WR/DB Carlos James, OL/DLs Emil Ekiyor,
Shawn King, and DJ Bleisath, and DS Antonio Langham.

TRUE IRONMAN

Tampa Bay Storm lineman Kelvin Kinney embodies the Ironman image that the Arena Football League has come known
for. Kinney, who is one of the top pass rushers in the AFL and has become one of the Storm's top pass blockers, has
spent precious little time away from the football field in the past few years.

From 2001-2003 Kinney played in 94 football games, an average of over 30 games per year. In 2001 Kinney was literally
rushing the passer non-stop, beginning the year with the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws. After 10 games with them, Kinney
moved on to the AFL, where he played in 11 games for the Detroit Fury. After the Fury's season was over in July, it was
on to the Canadian Football League, where Kinney played in 13 games for the Toronto Argonauts. In 2002 Kinney played
in 28 games, 14 with the Fury and 14 with the Edmonton Eskimos. And in the 2003 calendar year Kinney added 32 more
games played, 17 with the Tampa Bay Storm and 15 with Toronto and Edmonton of the CFL.

Kinney's year-round exploits have not slowed his production at all. In what will go down as his most successful year ever
as a professional football player, Kinney recorded 6.0 sacks and won an AFL championship with the Storm in 2003 and
then went north to wreak havoc in Canada. Splitting time between Toronto and Edmonton, Kinney recorded 12.0 sacks
and won a Grey Cup championship with the Eskimos. The 2003 CFL championship game marked the third straight
championship game that Kinney played in. He was with Edmonton in 2002 for their Grey Cup loss, then followed that
performance up with back-to-back championship game wins in Tampa Bay and again with Edmonton.

SUPER TIES

The 2004 Super Bowl pitted the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers, a matchup which featured some strong
loyalties among members of the Storm. Tampa Bay's roster features three of players with ties to the Super Bowl
champion New England Patriots. Quarterback Shane Stafford was signed by the Patriots in January 2003 and allocated to
NFL Europe by the Patriots, where he played the 2003 season. FB/LB Andre Bowden enjoyed a three-year stint from
1994-96. Antonio Langham played for the Patriots in 2000 and also played under current Patriots head coach Bill
Belichick while with the Cleveland Browns in 1994 and 1995. And, while not having direct ties to the two Super Bowl
teams, Storm defensive specialist Del Lee played for Belichick while both were with the New York Jets in 1999. The
Storm roster also features a pair of former Panthers in linemen Darion Conner and Shawn King. King was a second round
draft choice by Carolina in the 1995 NFL draft, the 36th overall selection.

BACK-TO-BACK FACTS

It has proven to be extremely difficult to repeat as ArenaBowl champions, but there is a precedent for repeating,
especially when Storm head coach Tim Marcum is involved. The last team to repeat as ArenaBowl champion was Tampa
Bay, who under the guidance of Marcum won back-to-back ArenaBowls in 1995 and 1996. The only other team to repeat
was the Detroit Drive, which actually won three straight ArenaBowl titles from 1988-90. In two of thoses seasons – 1988
and 1989 – Marcum was the Drive's head coach.

The closest a team has come to repeating as of late was the Orlando Predators, which won two titles in three seasons.
The Predators claimed the 1998 and 2000 championships, with Albany downing the Predators in 1999 to avoid a repeat
champion.

ARENABOWL HANGOVER?

The Tampa Bay Storm have had mixed success in the years following ArenaBowl championships. Following the team's
first title in 1991, the Storm advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs, only to lose in overtime to Orlando. Following the
1993 championship, the Storm put together what was then their worst season ever, finishing 7-6 overall and exiting the
playoffs after a first-round loss to Massachusetts. The Storm followed up their 1995 championship with a repeat
performance in 1996, but the 1997 season saw another average campaign, as the team finished with a 9-7 overall record.

PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS

The Tampa Bay Storm placed one player on the first-ever Preseason All-AFL team and was selected to finish second in
the league. The two preseason "polls" were taken by the newly-formed Arena Football League Writers Association.
Lawrence Samuels was selected as the preseason All-AFL pick at the WR/LB position. Also on the team was former Storm
lineman BJ Cohen, now of the New Orleans VooDoo. The Storm placed second in the AFLWA's preseason picks as the
eventual ArenaBowl champion. San Jose finished first in the voting, followed by Tampa Bay, Arizona, Los Angeles, and
Orlando.
