Philadelphia's Browder, Chicago's Moyer and San Jose's Davis earn week three honors
Published on February 24, 2004 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK â Philadelphia Soul quarterback NICK BROWDER, Chicago Rush offensive/defensive lineman JOHN MOYER and San Jose SaberCats wide receiver/defensive back RASHIED DAVIS have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 3 of the 2004 season.
Browder (6-3, 215, Valparaiso), a four-year veteran, guided the Soul (1-2) offense in their 56-34 victory over the Columbus Destroyers (1-2) on Saturday. He finished the contest by completing 18-of-22 for 228 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Browder completed 3-of-3 on third down, added two yards rushing on three attempts and connected on three second-half touchdowns to seal the Soul's first-ever victory. This marks the first time that the former Crusader has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Moyer (6-3, 265, Eastern Illinois), a six-year veteran, helped lead the AFL' s top defense (172.3 YPG, No. 1 in AFL) in the Chicago Rush 65-35 victory over the previously unbeaten Colorado Crush (2-1) on Sunday. Moyer, a First-Team All-Arena selection in 2003, recovered a fumble on Colorado's first possession and returned it seven yards, setting up good field position for the Rush (3-0) offense. The Rush's all-time sack leader (14.0) recorded his first sack of the season and helped stifle the Colorado offense with constant pressure on Colorado QB JOHN DUTTON. This marks the third time that the former Panther has garnered an AFL weekly honor.
Davis (5-10, 180, San Jose State), a second-year standout, ignited San Jose (2-0) with a great two-way performance in a 61-55 victory over the Los Angeles Avengers (2-1) on Sunday. Davis recorded four receptions for 34 yards, added 3.5 total tackles and a pass breakup on defense, while racking up 153 return yards, including a team record-tying two kickoff returns for touchdowns. With the victory, the SaberCats start the season at 2-0 and take over sole possession of first place in the Western Division. This marks the first time that the former Spartan has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner, Austin's John Kaleo, Chicago's Raymond Philyaw, Dallas' Glen Gauntt, Detroit's Andy Kelly, Las Vegas' Clint Dolezel, Los Angeles' Joe Douglass, New Orleans' Aaron Bailey, New York's Will Holder and San Jose's Mark Grieb.
