Gallup Outlaws News Release
Gallup, NM. Richard Zalenski was appointed as the scout for the ABA Gallup Talons in the Southwest Region of the US. Zalenski, or "Z" as he is familiarly known, is a former basketball coach at Northland Pioneer in Holbrook, AZ. His eight year tenure at that school enabled him to see many Native Americans play basketball either for or against his own team. As the coach at Pioneer, Z was able to take his team to the final four of the NJCAA Division I Tournament where he finished third. His teams averaged 24 wins a year and he was named ACCAC Coach of the Year twice and was also picked as the Regional Coach of the Year.
Z sent 49 of his junior college players on to Division I schools during his time there and has stayed in touch with basketball despite a disabling condition that forced him to quit coaching. Zalenski will join Rock LeBeau who is handling the Northern Plains area as the scouts for the Gallup Talons. Both will be covering large areas geographically in their search and will be in constant contact with Coach Clayton Shields as the team begins a series of tryouts that will yield the best players for the season that begins in November. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
