Tulsa Talons News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The af2 Tulsa Talons and Co-Owner/General Manager, Paul Ross, are thrilled to announce today the addition of WR/DB Chris Canty.
WR/DB Chris Canty (5'10, 190 lbs, Rookie) joins the Talons for his first season in arena ball. Although, Canty is a rookie in the af2 league, he is far from a rookie in the sport of football. Canty's professional career began in the 1997 NFL Draft. Canty was a 1st Round pick and 29th overall. Canty started his pro-career with the New England Patriots as a cornerback. In 1998, Canty started nine of sixteen games for the Patriots and recorded 11 kick-off returns for 198 yards and 16 punt returns for 170 yards. Defensively, Canty recorded 50 total tackles (45 solo), 6 pass deflections, 1 sack and 1 interception for 12 yards. In 1999-2000, Canty played for the Seattle Seahawks and ended as a New Orleans Saint.
The twenty-eight-year old, Canty is a native of Houston, Texas. After graduating high school, Canty attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship. At K-State, Bill Snyder and Bob Stoops, whom is now the Head Coach at OU, coached Canty. Canty was a three-time All-American at K-State as a defensive back.
"Chris has been one of many key additions to the team this off-season. The football knowledge that he brings to our team is something every team desires to obtain. This will be his first year of af2 football and we are confident he is going to pick it up very quickly. His speed, athleticism, toughness and cover skills are exactly what we look for in our defensive specialist. We know, Chris can make big plays and this will make our defense one of the best in the league," stated Defensive Coordinator Lucious Davis.
The Tulsa Talons kick-off their 2005 season on April 1st at the Amarillo Civic Center versus af2's new arrival, the Amarillo Dusters. Training camp begins Thursday, March 17th.
