Take 5 With Lewy's Legion The Carpenters
Published on October 8, 2010 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
The Carpenters were no strangers to hockey since their son Mike grew up playing hockey in the L-A area. When the Maineiacs first came to town, Mike often went to the games with friends. One of his closest friend's family has billeted right from the beginning. Jeanne says he would always come home from a game or his friend's house asking if they could be a billet family. They began billeting in 2004-2005. They began billeting because Mike and his sister Jackie were now teenagers, they love hockey, and they thought it would be a great experience for their family. And it has been nothing less than a great experience. Since the 04-05 season, they've been fortunate to share their home with just two players and have established some very, very strong bonds with them and their families. Those two players are Marc-Andre Daneau and Pierre-Olivier Morin. Two absolutely wonderful young men who have both contributed so much to the organization and community.
The Carpenter's have traveled across the border to watch "their" boys and the MAINEiacs play several times. They even went to the Memorial Cup in Vancouver in 2007. I asked Jeanne, the Memorial Cup was obviously an amazing experience, other than that, what was your favorite trip to Canada? She chuckled and said, "Shawingan. When we went to Shawinigan during playoffs and beat them in their own (old) barn. That was awesome! That place was so loud. And we beat them!! They had cardboard tomahawks that they gave out during the game and they took ours away on the way out because we were Maineiacs fans but disgruntled Shawinigan fans were throwing theirs on the ground so we picked some and got our souvenirs."
The organization is always looking for good billet homes so I asked, "what would you say to anyone who wanted to become a billet family?" Jeanne replied, "It is a lot of work but it is very rewarding! You will make ties and form relationships that you will have forever!"
Any one who knows Jeanne, knows a couple things about her. 1- You can almost always find her at the family owned fruit stand, Blackies. She pretty much runs the show for her dad and 2- She makes a mean chocolate chip cookie and the most amazing chocolate chip pumpkin squares. That being said 2 funny things to note... 1- Jeanne visited Marc-Andre's family in Canada over the summer and having grown up on a farm herself, she found it humorous to see that tomato plants were being held up by broken hockey sticks there and 2- PO is definitely all about her chocolate chip cookies over pumpkin squares. Not quite sure what he has against pumpkins?!?
All being said, I know the Carpenter family very well and they are awesome! Real good people with a wonderful home to offer a player to follow his dreams!
