Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - In what has already become a historic season for the Tacoma Rainiers and their fans, another milestone has been reached. This season, 352,450 fans came through the gates of Cheney Stadium, which is an attendance record for a Tacoma ballclub.
"Our fans continued to show why they are the best fans in all of minor league baseball this season," said Rainiers President Aaron Artman. "Even in some rough economic times fans came out in the hundreds of thousands to be part of this historic 50th season of baseball at Cheney Stadium."
The previous record of 350,919 fans was set in 1994 when the Tacoma Tigers finished fifth in the Pacific Coast League Divisional Race. Former Tacoma Tigers General Manager Frank Colarusso remembers that magical 1994 season.
"It was a special summer in Tacoma with terrific weather, the roof collapsed in the Kingdome, baseball went on strike and Alex Rodriguez made his first appearance at Cheney Stadium with the Calgary Cannons," said Colarusso. "It all made for a historic season."
Colarusso says a lot about 2009's record breaking season reminds him of that 1994 season.
"All records get broken and Schlegel Sports and the Tacoma Rainiers should be proud of what they achieved this summer."
As for this season, the magic continues for the PCL Pacific North Division Champion Rainiers who begin the Pacific Conference Championship Series with the Sacramento River Cats tonight.
