Tacoma Navigators News Release

Tacoma, WA. The ABA Tacoma Navigators professional basketball team has hired former NBA and Seattle Supersonics guard Vincent Askew as Head Coach and Director of Basketball Operations. Askew starred at Frayser High School in Memphis and enjoyed a stellar college career at Memphis State. He was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 37th overall pick in the 1987 NBA draft and played for the Golden State Warriors where he was coached by Don Nelson. He played five seasons for the Seattle Supersonics from 1992-96 under coach George Karl, then played for Larry Brown with the Indiana Pacers and Mike Dunleavy with the Portland Trailblazers. Tacoma is Askew's second career coaching position.

"Vince learned coaching from some of the NBA's best," said Navigators President and CEO, Michael Tuckman. "He maintains good relationships with his former coaches-in particular with George Karl of the Denver Nuggets and his former Sonics teammate Nate McMillan, the current Portland coach. He also has good relationships with Sonics head coach Bob Weiss and Bucks head man Dwayne Casey, whom he met while playing for Seattle."

The Navigators open the 2005-2006 ABA season at home versus the defending Western Conference Champion Blackhhawks in November.
