Navigators get thrilling 92-89 win over Slam
January 27, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Tacoma Navigators News Release
(BELLINGHAM, WA)-The Tacoma Navigators professional basketball team got "double-doubles" from its star shooting guard and 2005-06 ABA All-Star, Tim Ellis and power forward Dontay Harris, and escaped with a 91-89 victory over the very tough Bellingham Slam Thursday night. The 6'4" Ellis took game-high scoring honors for the 17th time in his stellar ABA career with 30 points, and added 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. Harris collected 19 points and 15 boards for his seventh double outing of the 2005-06 ABA season.
Rookie Tacoma point guard Jamaal Miller nearly matched Ellis with 27 points, and deftly guided former NBA and Seattle Sonics star Vincent Askew's efficient offense all night long in securing the win for the visitors. Bellingham big man, Brian ("Yogi") Dennis, had another monster night defensively with 16 boards to go along with his 18 from Tuesday night's Slam win. Unlike the Slam blowout in which Bellingham jumped out to a 15-0 start and never looked backed, Tacoma led most of the first half and took a 47-44 advantage into the intermission. Bellingham came out of the gate on fire in the third period and led by as many as twelve points in the fourth before the Navigators cut the margin to two, 84-82, on a rare four-point foul line visit by Tim Ellis when Slam head coach Rob Ridnour and forward T.J. Williams were both assessed technical fouls on the same play. Ellis made 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Tacoma pushed its record to 9-5 and held on to second place in the Ron Boone Division, while Bellingham stayed right on their heels at 12-10. Tacoma hosts Bellevue Saturday night at Mt. Tahoma High School with tip-off at 7:05 PM. It'll be "Mountain Mitsubishi Night." Owner Steve Hiatt will be giving away free General Admission tickets ($12.00 value) all day Friday and Saturday at his dealership, 7030 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma, WA, (253) 671-7100.
