Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (1-1) lost 5-4 to the Kansas City T-Bones (1-1) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.

The T-Bones took the lead for good when they scratched out a run in the top of the seventh inning. Tied at 3-3, Brandon Pearl chopped a single just passed a drawn-in Ryan Khoury at shortstop to drive in Felix Molina from third base with the go-ahead run.

In the top of the ninth, Kansas City manufactured an insurance run. Pearl led off with an infield single, took second base on a groundout to second from Kennard Jones, and took third on a groundout to shortstop from Justin Bass. Brandon Jones beat out a high chopper to shorstop that scored Pearl with the T-Bones' fifth tally.

C.J. Ziegler led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to left field against T-Bones' closer Jhonny Montoya that cut the lead to 5-4, but Montoya eventually stranded the tying run on first base to record the save.

Kansas City starter Aaron Meade earned the win, allowing three unearned runs in seven innings. Meade gave up four hits, two walks, and struck out four.

Daniel Bennett took the loss for Wichita.

The T-Bones scored three runs in the top of the fourth, all with two outs, against Wingnuts' starter Chris Smith. Matt Padgett, Devin Goodwin, and Felix Molina hit consecutive RBI singles to make it 3-0.

With Khoury on second and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Molina made a throwing error on a John Rodriguez groundball that resulted in runners on the corners. Ziegler fought off a single to right field that scored Khoury, while Cole Armstrong followed with a two-run double to left that tied the game.

Smith took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits in six innings. Smith struck out eight and walked one.
