Szwarz and Chappell amongst Finalists for League Academic Honors

(Saginaw, MI) The Ontario Hockey League announced the top academic scholars for the 2008-2009 season Thursday, with Spirit forwards Jordan Szwarz and Chris Chappell amongst the finalists.

Szwarz was nominated for both the Bobby Smith Trophy, awarded to the league's Scholastic Player of the Year, and the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award, which is given to the Top Academic Player in High School. The 1991-born native of Burlington, Ontario attended Nouvel Catholic Central High School during the season and earned a 3.37 grade point average.

Chappell was a nominee for the Roger Neilson Memorial Award, given to the Top Academic Player in College or University. The 1988-born Pickering, Ontario native attended Northwood University during the 2008-2009 season and posted a 3.7 grade point average.

The Saginaw Spirit is committed to partnering with the community to develop its young athletes into successful people, on and off the ice. As such, the Spirit make education a priority for all of its players and have worked with Nouvel Catholic Central High School and Northwood University to develop a scholastic program that best fits the needs of both the student and the team during the increasingly busy hockey season. Saginaw Spirit Academic Advisor and Nouvel Catholic Central teacher Marge Ash also works with students weekly to ensure that the players continue to succeed in the classroom.

The Ontario Hockey League considers education one of its top priorities as well, and continues to recognize the top scholastic players at the conclusion of every season. Brampton's Matt Duchene secured the Scholastic Player of the Year honors as the recipient of the Bobby Smith Trophy. Guelph's Tim Priamo, formerly of the Saginaw Spirit, won the Roger Neilson Memorial Award and Freddie Hamilton of the Niagara IceDogs was the winner of the Ivan Tennant Memorial Trophy.
