Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Silver Knights of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) have announced the signings of defender Marcos Chantel, midfielders Vittorio Petrera and Cory Elenio, and forward LJ Papaleo to the roster for the 2014-2015 season.

Silver Knights Defender, Marcos Chantel, Salt City Veteran.

Chantel is one of the most experienced indoor players on the Silver Knights. The Brazilian is a four-team indoor soccer veteran. Coming off of last year's effort which included one goal, Chantel hopes to continue to be a sturdy influence in the back, totaling 40 blocks in 62 appearances in his career.

"I expect Marcos to be steady, to give leadership at the back, and keeps us together as a group," Tanner said.

The Brazilian hopes to bring success to the Oncenter War Memorial Arena this season, since Chantel hopes to build off of the Silver Knights' first ever playoff appearance.

Silver Knights Midfielder, Vittorio Petrera, Syracuse Native.

Coming back for another year in the Orange, Silver and Black, Petrera is a Syracuse native, earning the nickname "The Mayor" from his teammates since he has so many connections in the city. He earned All-American honors in the college and high school ranks at Mohawk Valley Community College and Bishop Ludden. The dynamic player is ready for his third year.

"I've been gaining some experience every year. Actually watching the first year and playing last year, I've learned a lot," Vittorio said. "The older guys have helped me along a lot and it's easy to gel into the team."

The Syracuse native scored a memorable first career goal against the Pennsylvania Roar on January 25. He appeared in 17 games during the 2013-2014 MISL season, but he could see the field more this campaign.

"I want to provide a calming presence and get back on defense. It's just what we need to do," Vittorio explained.

Silver Knights Midfielder, Cory Elenio, Returning Midfielder.

After a one year hiatus from the indoor game, Cory Elenio returned back to the Orange, Silver and Black. The ex-Columbus Crew selection played for the Silver Knights in their inaugural season, notching 45 points on 16 goals and 14 assists in the 2011-2012 campaign. Now back in the indoor game, expect Elenio to pick up where he left off.

"It'll take a while to get adjusted, but he has speed, size and strength. He can do it all," Coach Tanner said. "I could see him being a quiet leader."

His versatility will be a huge asset for the Knights this season. Elenio scored 10 total goals with nine assists in 18 games last year.

"I've mostly played midfield before but I look forward to contributing in any way possible," Elenio explained.

The midfielder will add another dimension to the squad's attack.

Silver Knights Forward, LJ Papaleo, CBA Product.

Papaleo returns for his second year with the squad. The Syracuse University grad tallied five goals on 18 appearances for the Orange. The Forward signed his first professional contract for a Polish Second Division side before joining the Syracuse pro team.

His first campaign was highlighted by a back heel score against the Thruway rival Rochester Lancers in his first home game at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena on November 22, 2013. Papaleo finished the season with five goals and two assists.

With his experience as the U19 Silver Knights coach, expect smart and tactical play from the forward.
