Syracuse Gets Set for Three-Match Weekend vs St. Louis and Milwaukee

January 18, 2018 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

Silver Knights look to rebound after overtime loss

The Syracuse Silver Knights (5-5) play three matches this weekend against MASL Central Division opponents. Syracuse plays the St. Louis Ambush (2-11) on Friday, January 19th, and Sunday, January 21st. The Silver Knights play the Milwaukee Wave (12-2) on Saturday, January 20th.

Syracuse lost its last game in overtime against the Baltimore Blast by a score of 5-4. Jon Orlando scored the game winning goal 1:27 into the overtime frame.

St. Louis picked up its second win of the season with a 7-5 victory over the Florida Tropics in its last match. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Ambush.

Milwaukee enters its match against Syracuse after losing its first two matches of the season to the Sonora Soles and the Monterrey Flash last weekend.

Here are five things to watch in Syracuse's matches against St. Louis and Milwaukee this weekend:

1. I just can't get enough soccer

The last two Syracuse matches have gone into overtime. The Silver Knights have already played in four overtime matches this season. Syracuse is 2-2 in those games. Kenardo Forbes seems to like the extra frame of soccer. He has scored both overtime winners for Syracuse this season.

2. Taking advantage of the extra man

Syracuse was able to do something against Baltimore in its last match that no other team this season has done against the Blast - score multiple power play goals. Coming into last Friday's match against the Silver Knights, Baltimore had killed 10 of the 11 power plays it had faced this season. The only team to score a power play goal against the Blast was the Florida Tropics. Syracuse is now 7-18 on power plays this season.

3. Momentum for the Ambush

St. Louis started the 2017-18 MASL season in dreadful fashion. The Ambush lost its first eight matches of the season. St. Louis got its first win of the season against the Cedar Rapids Rampage back on December 17th. But in its last match against Florida, the Ambush were in danger of losing its fourth straight game. Facing a 5-2 deficit heading into the fourth quarter, St. Louis scored five unanswered goal to complete the comeback and gain a little momentum heading into this weekend's matches against Syracuse.

4. It's Ian Bennett's world, and we're living in it.

Milwaukee rattled off 12 straight wins before its two losses this past weekend. The biggest catalyst to the early and continued success of the Wave has been Ian Bennett. The midfielder has earned five MASL Team of the Week honors this season alone, including two MASL Player of the Week honors. Bennett is second in the MASL in points (43) and goals (34). He also leads the MASL with 9 power play goals this season. The Canadian has done it all for Milwaukee this season, and he continues to make his mark as one of the best players in indoor soccer today.

5. On the road again

This weekend marks the seventh, eighth, and ninth games this season. Ironically, Syracuse has performed much better on the road that they have at home this season. The Silver Knights are 4-2 during road matches this season. This weekend will not be easy, however, as Syracuse has to play three matches in the span of under 70 hours across the Midwest.

Kickoff against St. Louis is set for 8:35 p.m. EST on Friday and 4:05 p.m. on Sunday. Kickoff against Milwaukee is set for 1:05 p.m. EST on Saturday. You can watch all three matches on MASL.tv. Syracuse returns to action at home on January 28th, as the Florida Tropics play the Silver Knights for the final time this season.
