CRUNCH POINTS STREAK CLIMBS TO FOUR GAMES
The Crunch took five out of six points in Week 23, but dropped back into second place in the North Division. The Crunch (37-17-4-2) are one of three teams with 80 or more points this season; they trail the Rochester Americans by one point with a game in hand for the division lead and only trail league-leading Charlotte by five points for the top spot in the AHL.
Syracuse swept a two-game series with the Utica Comets to begin the week. The Crunch rode a three-goal first period to a 5-3 win on the road Wednesday night, pushing their road winning streak up to three games. In the rematch at home on Friday, Eddie Pasquale earned his fourth shutout of the season with a 25-save performance in a 4-0 win, the Crunch's league-leading 11th shutout of the season. The week wrapped up with an overtime loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a game that saw the Crunch hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2 before the Penguins rallied.
Syracuse looks to extend its recent run, which has seen the Crunch collect points in nine of the last 10 games (7-1-2-0) with three games in four days in Week 24.
TOP PERFORMERS
Forward Ross Colton has matched his career high with a five-game scoring streak after logging four points (3g, 1a) in three games last week. The rookie potted a goal Wednesday in Utica, added an assist on the game's first goal - the eventual game-winner - Friday against the Comets, then scored twice Saturday in Wilkes-Barre. He scored the opening goal then struck again in the third period with a go-ahead goal - his fourth third period goal that has either tied the game or given the Crunch the lead this season.
The 22-year-old has seven points (4g, 3a) during his current five-game scoring streak and has 27 points (13g, 14a) in 55 games this season.
***
Fellow rookie Taylor Raddysh also rides a five-game scoring streak into Week 24; it's his longest run since a nine-game stretch Oct. 26-Nov. 17. Skating on a line with Colton and veteran Andy Andreoff, Raddysh has five points (1g, 4a) in his last five games, including his first career game-winning goal in Friday's 4-0 win against Utica.
The 21-year-old ranks second among Crunch rookies and is tied for 14th overall among first-year AHL players with 36 points (15g, 21a).
TEAM NOTES
Before being held scoreless in Saturday's overtime loss to the Penguins, Carter Verhaeghe was on a seven-game scoring streak (4g, 5a). The 23-year-old, in his second season with the Crunch, ranks second overall in the AHL in scoring with 67 points (27g, 40a) in 60 games. Those 67 points are tied with Jonathan Marchessault for the most by a Crunch skater in a single season during the Lightning affiliation.
Rookie Alex Barré-Boulet became the leading Crunch rookie scorer during the Lightning affiliation with his 54th point, breaking his tie with Mathieu Joseph (2017-18). His 28 goals are the fourth-most by a Crunch rookie.
Cory Conacher became the all-time leading Crunch scorer during the Lightning affiliation with his 158th points (55g, 103a), moving past former teammate Yanni Gourde (2013-17).
UPCOMING: LAVAL, HARTFORD, BINGHAMTON
The Crunch begin a three-game week with their final visit of the season to Place Bell, where they rumble with the Laval Rocket. Syracuse has won three of the first four matches in the six-game season series, but the teams split a weekend set in Laval in December. Over the first two years of this series, the Crunch are under 0.500 (2-3-0-1) in six games at Laval.
The Crunch host back-to-back home games starting Friday with the final meeting of the season with the Hartford Wolf Pack. They thrashed the Wolf Pack, 6-0, in their only previous meeting this season Feb. 8; Eddie Pasquale made 21 saves for his first shutout of the season in the win.
Saturday brings the conclusion of a 10-game season series with Binghamton when the Devils visit Syracuse. The Crunch are 9-1-0-0 versus Binghamton this season and are 15-3-0-1 against the Devils the last two years. The Crunch blanked the Devils for the third time this season in their last match Feb. 26.
