Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch and Wegmans have partnered to hold a food drive benefiting Blessings in a Backpack during the Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 games at the War Memorial Arena.
Fans are encouraged to bring healthy nonperishable food items to the Crunch offices leading up to the Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 games against the Utica Comets and the Cleveland Monsters. All food items will be donated to Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit organization that strives to ensure children don't go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action. Suggested food items include no-sugar added fruits, low-sodium vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or no-fat shelf-stable dairy and lean protein.
Fans who donate items will be able to purchase discounted $16 tickets to the Feb. 1 or Feb. 2 game, subject to additional fees. The Crunch will also collect food items during games with collections bins in the lobbies.
"Wegmans is glad to partner with the Syracuse Crunch on this initiative," said Evelyn Ingram, Director of Community Relations for Wegmans. "Providing healthy food options for children is one of our company priorities, so we are proud to be able to assist in meeting that need."
Hunger has both short and long-term negative effects on children's health and ability to succeed in school. Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry. Blessings in a Backpack is providing 3.2 million hunger-free weekends for nearly 93,000 children in 46 states and the District of Columbia. For more information visit www.blessingsinabackpack.org.
