Sylvia Fowles announced as 2009-12 National Team Member

CHICAGO, August 18, 2009 - Chicago Sky Center Sylvia Fowles was named as one of the initial eight players for the 2009-12 USA Basketball Women's National Team.

Fowles led the United States team in both points (13.4ppg ) and rebounds (8.4 rpg) in helping the team to earn its fourth consecutive gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Folwes also led in field goal percentage (64.3%) in their eight games played.

"Having my name on that list is a great honor," said Fowles. "Not only is it validation of my hard work and comittment to excellence in the game of basketball, it provides me the opportunity to represent my country for another four years, which is an amazing experience"

Seven other returning gold medalists from the 2008 group were named to the team as well.

The five member USA Basketball Women's National Team Player Selection Committee announced Monday that Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury), Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx), Kara Lawson (Sacramento Monarchs), Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks) and cappie Pondexter (Phoenix Mercury) will also play on the 2009-12 team. Geno Auriemma will return as the head coach.

The Team USA roster is expected to remain fluid and athletes will be added and subtracted progressively through the 2012 Olympics.
