Colorado Springs, CO - The Switchbacks put in a strong performance to beat the Oklahoma City Energy FC 2-0 on Saturday night in front of 4,102 fans at Weidner Field.
Coming off of a road trip with losses to San Antonio and Rio Grande Valley, the Switchbacks were looking to get back into a playoff position at their home field. The first half proved to be two teams not wanting to make a mistake as chances were hard to come by. Adam Jahn and Micheal Azira both had opportunities for Oklahoma City and Colorado Springs, respectively, but both shots were saved to go into the half at 0-0.
The second half picked up after the Switchbacks started making substitutions. Switchbacks head coach, Steve Trittschuh, made an attacking sub when he put Toby Uzo in for JJ Tambe in the 73rd minute and it proved to be the right decision. Just two minutes after coming on, Uzo got his head on the end of a cross from Jordan Burt and scored his first goal for the Switchbacks in USL action. In the 89th minute, Shane Malcolm received a pass from Uzo and did the rest, beating his defender one-on-one before finishing off a beautiful goal. That goal would cap off a strong performance from the Switchbacks to win 2-0 on Saturday night.
"It was emotional. This was a very emotional goal. Of the games this year, if I did come in and score, I wouldn't have felt the way I did today," said Man of the Match, Toby Uzo. "It was so emotional because I've been wanting this chance. This goal was much needed and the team needs to go on a run to make the playoffs at the end of the year."
The Switchbacks are back on the road next for the next two games as they face the Tulsa Roughnecks on August 11th and the Phoenix Rising on August 25th. The Switchbacks are back at Weidner Field on August 29th to face Real Monarchs SLC in a rivalry match. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Switchbacks Poster and mini soccer balls on 1980's Night courtesy of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 6:00 PM.
