Saint Louis FC News Release
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Saint Louis FC won 2-0 against Seattle Sounders FC 2 in front of 4,134 fans at Toyota Stadium in Match 22 of the USL Regular Season.
Saint Louis FC opened the scoring early when Kyle Culbertson crossed the ball to a poaching Kyle Greig to finish from close range in the 3rd minute. The home side would double their lead in the 34th minute as Austin Ledbetter received the ball from Wal Fall and curled his effort around Seattle goalkeeper Calle Brown for his first professional goal. STLFC goalkeeper Jake Fenlason would then step up to save a penalty kick from David Estrada in the 88th minute to preserve the clean sheet and earn all three points. The result sees Saint Louis FC improve to 7-6-8 with 29 points while Seattle Sounders FC 2 fall to 4-14-2 with 14 points in the USL Western Conference.
The first half started with Saint Louis FC on the front foot and they would convert their first chance of the night in the 3rd minute as Culbertson had his shot saved by Brown but the rebound fell kindly for him to cross to a waiting Greig to score his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Orlando City-loanee Pierre Da Silva then had a shot from about 25 yards that went over the crossbar in the 19th minute as the home side pressed for a second. Seattle would respond with a free kick opportunity in the 31st minute that Sam Rogers shot from 30 yards that nearly caught out Fenlason but hit the side netting. Saint Louis FC would find the second goal shortly afterwards, however, as Ledbetter let loose from the top of the box for his first goal of the season and first as a professional in the 34th minute to take a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The second half saw Seattle Sounders FC 2 press to get back into the game and they nearly opened their scoring through Rogers from another set piece situation in the 50th minute. Fenlason would then step up big in the 54th minute as Estrada was played through on goal but he was denied by the onrushing goalkeeper. Seattle looked to be handed a lifeline as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute but Fenlason guessed correctly to deny Estrada to keep his fifth clean sheet of the season.
"First half I thought we were outstanding and maybe the best we've been all season," said STLFC Head Coach Anthony Pulis. "We moved the football really quickly, our positional play was excellent, and we could have had more goals, yet the second half was a real disappointment to be honest. I thought we took our foot off the pedal and credit to Seattle they made a couple changes and they were a lot better while we were nowhere we needed to be. It's a lesson for us that we can't allow complacency to set in."
