Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 0-1 to the Real Monarchs SLC after playing down a man and a late penalty miss by Captain Luke Vercollone.

The Switchbacks controlled the majority of the possession in the first half but they weren't able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Switchbacks out-shot the Real Monarchs 12-3 in the first half, but it was a defensive mistake that allowed Elder Torres to finish Real Monarch's lone shot on goal in the 24th minute to give them a 0-1 lead. The Switchbacks would continue to control the majority of the game but attempts by Saeed Robinson, Rony Argueta, and Christian Ibeagha went unfinished leaving the Switchbacks trailing at halftime.

"We had plenty of chances to put the game away," said Marty Maybin. "But, when you don't take your chances the other team builds their confidence."

The Switchbacks continued to play with intensity as the second half progressed, but unfortunately still weren't able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Switchbacks luck continued to run dry as Christian Ibeagha was shown a straight red card in the 69th minute. The Switchbacks would continue to play well despite playing down a man for the majority of the second half. It appeared that the Switchbacks had caught a break in the final play of the game as they had earned a penalty kick about 6 minutes into stoppage time. Unfortunately Captain Luke Vercollone sent the ball over the bar and the Switchbacks would take the 0-1 loss.

"I thought we did enough to win the game or even get a point out of it," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We're looking for the guys to be ruthless in front of goal and finish those chances. Unfortunately we're just not clicking right now, but we'll regroup and get ready for Wednesday."

The Switchbacks play the Real Monarchs at Switchbacks Stadium again on Wednesday, June 29th at 7:00 P.M to close out the home series with the Real Monarchs.
