Sweets Ink Rutherford from Cornell

WALLA WALLA, Wash - The Walla Walla Sweets announced the signing of another familiar face for head coach Frank Mutz on Thursday. Cole Rutherford will join the Sweets from Cornell after playing for Mutz in high school at Chaminade. It is another big signing for the Sweets as they look to take home the West Coast League championship in 2016.

Cole Rutherford, a 6-foot 4-inch, 225 pound first baseman, will join Cornell this season after spending his first two college years with Orange Coast College. During his sophomore season with OCC, he hit .313 with three doubles and 14 RBIs in 25 games. Rutherford was a part of two state championship teams with the OCC Pirates.

"The main thing that intrigued me [about the WCL] is that it is one of the premier collegiate summer leagues in the nation," Rutherford said. "I look forward to playing with and against some of the most talented college baseball players in the country."

"This summer I am looking to win," he added. "I would love to be a part of a team that is able to be accomplish something special and bring home a WCL championship."

"Cole will most likely hit in the four slot for the Sweets," Mutz said. "Cole was having a career year last season at Orange Coast College until he suffered a terrible ankle injury. He has recovered to full health and will start at first base this season for Cornell. I'm so excited to coach Cole again. If he does not get taken in the 2016 MLB draft the Sweets will have a true power hitter in the top of our order."
