Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2012 season of West Coast League baseball tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. at Borleske Stadium against the Corvallis Knights. The team has signed four players to round out its roster for the opening series.

The Sweets have signed DJ Smith to a full-season contract. Smith is a sophomore from Ellensburg, Washington. The 6-foot 1-inch, 210 pound pitcher will be attending Lewis-Clark state in the fall. Last season he attend Community College of Spokane where he posted a record of 6-3, striking out 76 batters in 78.1 innings of work and allowing just 18 BB. Smith's 76 strikeouts had him in third place in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.

"Smith had a strong season at CCS," said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi. "He's a quality kid who comes from a good program and we're excited to have him playing for us this summer."

Three players from Walla Walla Community College have signed 10-day contracts with the Sweets. Joining the bullpen will be 6-foot 3-inch, 195- pound left-handed pitcher Joe Arlt. A freshman last season at WWCC, Arlt went 4-4 with a 2.43 ERA and finished second on the team with 51 strikeouts.

Jared Jordan, a 5'11", 170 pound middle infielder will also see time on the field for the Sweets. A native of Twin Falls, Idaho, Jordan hit .273 last season for WWCC and led the team in home runs and RBIs. In 2010 Jordan was chosen all-region player of the year, and was a recipient of the Harold Brown Award.

Joining his fellow Warrior teammates will be Jarrod Turner, a 6-foot 1-inch, 200-pound freshman catcher from Richland, Washington. As a player at Richland High School, Turner was selected to the 1st team All-Columbia Basing Big Nine (4A) as a catcher, and in 2011 was named to the All-State team. This past season for the Warriors he hit .314, led the team in doubles, was second in RBI, and registered a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

"I had the opportunity to coach Jared, Joe, and Jarrod this spring at WWCC," added Biagi. "They're all talented ball players and I think we can expect to see positive contributions from all of them this weekend."

Opening Weekend will start on Friday with Opening Day, continue with magnet schedule giveaway night presented by Northwestern Mutual, 1490 ESPN, and the Union Bulletin, and will conclude with a fireworks show following the game on Sunday, June 3.
