Sweets Blow Four Run Lead in 11 Inning Loss

August 8, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

Walla Walla, Wa- Cooper Powell of the Sweets appeared to have his first win of the year after exiting in the seventh with a 4-0 lead, but the bullpen could not hold it in a 9-6 loss in 11 innings to Kelowna. The Falcons (32-19) came back twice to beat the Sweets (22-29) to take the lead in the season series at 4-3.

Walla Walla jumped out in front early to a 4-0 lead into the seventh. It was highlighted by a two-run home run by Alex McKenna in the fifth. It was his first of the season and he finished a single shy of the cycle on the day.

The bullpen then took over and gave up five runs in the eighth inning. Four of them were unearned as the Sweets committed two errors in the frame. With three more errors tonight, Walla Walla now has 25 errors in their last nine games, where they have a 1-8 record.

The Sweets would battle back though and take the lead again in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly by Jon Hechtner tying it at 5-5. The throw went home and Willie MacIver tried to tag from first, but the throw to second went into center which allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate.

The Falcons would tie it in the ninth and put three runs up in the 11th, all with two-outs.

Powell was great for the Sweets. He pitched seven scoreless, only allowing six hits while not walking any and striking out three. He will finish the year with a 0-5 record.

The Sweets and the Falcons will match-up tomorrow for game two at 7:05pm.
